The real surprise is that Cody isn't on that list. He initiates contact then falls to the floor with the best of them.

Hansbrough is currently sixth in the league in free throw attempts per 36, not that I expect that to continue. It depends on how much he shoots. You might notice that Tyler is leading the team's bigs in RB%, just as he did in preseason. That trend should continue if he ever breaks the rotation. Also expect his Defensive RT to go way down.

Since Coach Clifford has Zeller, Hawes, and Kaminsky ahead of him on the depth chart, it may not be until the first week of December or so that it becomes obvious the team needs Hansbrough's defense on the second unit. I am sure that is why Cho signed him in the first place, but the coach and GM are not necessarily on the same page with this team!

As for Tyler's play at the end of the two games in which he appeared, he is so hyped up, so anxious to show what he can do, he has been out of control. As with Batum, fans need to give him a chance to settle down and find a rhythm. My observation has been that he is most effective in 11 to 20 minutes per game, in other words, playing a good stretch in both halves.

Hansbrough is not in our rotation, and probably won't be barring injury.

Meanwhile, Charlotte ranks 18th in the league in DefRT, behind division rivals Orlando, Atlanta and Miami, and just slightly ahead of the Washington Wizards.

The team is also 22nd in opponent eFG%:

Hansbrough will be available to trade on Dec. 16. But let's see what happens by then.

After tonight's game it is more obvious than ever that the second unit needs a guy who can defend the inside, rebound, set screens to open up shots for the wings, and score when open near the basket. This guy, Tyler Hansbrough, showed what he can do before the all-star break last season:

Hawes and Zeller were awful tonight.

Austin Peters at The Hive writes, "Coach Steve Clifford and the coaching staff need to figure the defense out some time soon, otherwise it will be a long season on that end for Charlotte, no matter how good the offense is."

Enter Mr. Hansbrough. The lineup I would like to see on the second unit is Lin Lamb Willliams Hansbrough Kaminsky/Zeller. Tyler can play either the 4 or the 5 depending on the matchup. Statistally, Kaminsky has outperformed Zeller by a substantial margin so far. Hans is good at directing traffic on the defensive end and can help Marvin keep things "organized," as the coach likes to say.

So let me get this straight. Cody Zeller could not play against Chicago, the team was outrebounded 57-45, Gasol and McDermott shot a combined 10-19 for 27 points, Taj Gibson added 6-10, and Tyler Hansbrough never saw the court? Then Portland outrebounded the Hornets 46-37, while the second team let the Blazers back in the game?

The coach must really not want Tyler on his team. They must be saving him for a trade in December. But without his rebounding and defensive skills, his energy and ability to make things happen on both ends of the court, I doubt the Hornets can make the playoffs. They might break .500, though.

But what do I know? I've only been watching basketball for 50 years.

Justin Thomas on the importance of rebounding:

http://espn730.com/common/more.php?m=49&post_id=7291

<Clifford specifically pointed to two games that would have the Hornets at 8-4 rather 6-6.

“In that game, no matter what (against the Knicks) if we rebound we win,” said Clifford. “Same thing in Chicago, if we rebound in Chicago we win.”>

<“You can play well, you just can’t give up 20 second chance points, 18 second chance points,” said Clifford.

On most nights if you give up 18 to 20 second chance points you’re more than likely going to lose, and Charlotte came up empty in both games.

What makes you scratch your head is that this team knows what their roles are, according to Clifford.

“The rebounding part is not natural to the majority of them but it’s something we have to learn how to do,” said Clifford. “As you saw last night (Tuesday vs NY), we did a lot of good things, although we were tired but the bottom line is if we rebound, we win.”>

Completely unrelated to the discussion, but I'm curious if your screen name is a reference to euphoniums and busses. Probably not, but when I see even the hint of drum corps people on sites like this, I get at least moderately excited.

No, it is the name of an ancient Trojan warrior. He was responsible for wounding Patroklus, the friend of Achilleus.

"Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilleus."

Im not sure why Hawes minutes havent gone to Psycho T and Frank. When we need defense from that spot go with the Psycho, otherwise Frank should be getting most of the minutes. Surely this will happen at some point. Hawes is a complete joke.

Return to Charlotte Hornets
