Q-bert: The Roy Hibbert Thread

Post#1 » by yosemiteben » Mon Jul 11, 2016 7:33 pm

So what are we naming this?

Hornets site posted a lengthy interview with Hibbert, featuring a Cho appearance: http://www.nba.com/hornets/video/2016/07/07/1467930155543-160707-Roy_Matt.mov-638101/

No clue why they couldn't turn on the damn lights.

I predict he is less popular than Hawes.

Hes almost certainly the worst offensive center in the league. I can't for the life of me figure out why we were so hellbent on losing biyombo for nothing then we go replace him with hibbert.

Biyombo on a 4 year cheap deal would have been a giant trade chip.

Hibbert has really slipped defensively, I guess we gotta hope last year was an aberration but he's about as poor as it gets for rebounding which is a huge problem for us between zeller, kaminsky, hawes

Letting Biz go was a mistake. I wasn't that big on him, but we could have signed him long term at a great price, knowing he'd either improve or be a forever reserve. Cliff had no patience, or no guts. In any case he really never had a chance here.

Hibbert has a chance for a fresh start. Hoping he comes through then wants a reasonable deal to stay a few years.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

We didn't draft my giant, but at least we got one in free agency.

Hopefully has already reached out to Diop for some guidance

Visiting Pacer fan here... it's kind of funny that Al Jeff is now our backup C and Roy is yours. How have the mighty fallen.

Not really sure what to expect from Roy this year. His best basketball skill has always been being tall, and I guess that hasn't changed, but with the league going pace-and-space there's not much value in that any more. The other thing about Hibbert is that he's always had a self-confidence issue. You'll notice he talks grandiosely at times ("I'm the best passing big man in the East") but that's just to cover his own insecurities. I don't think he's taken his change of circumstances very well, i.e. from a guy who was a game-changer vs LeBron to an afterthought who is unplayable vs fast lineups. But hopefully he bounces back this year. Maybe being signed to a clear bench role from the start will keep his expectations manageable.

He's slow and unathletic, and there's no changing that. But he blocks out well, even if he's not mobile enough to grab the board. He's moderately skilled as a passer and shooter, but he kind of fancies himself as a low post beast, which he is not. He can screen pretty well, but his lack of speed really limits what he can do in the P&R. And of course, he still protects the interior as well as anyone - admittedly a less useful skill now that everyone is raining 3's.

I think this pretty much sums up my thoughts on roy exactly. His negatives are glaring and his positives are becoming less positive daily

Good luck with Al's knee. He can still be useful in spurts but he can be a bit blackholish and his PnR defense is gross.

The appropriate title is already there: "Placeholder." Younger 2017 FA or RFA defensive 4/5's include Noel, Gobert, Amir Johnson, Jeff Withey, Adams, Ibaka, and Dieng.

Several teams have centers they could move for the $: Nurkic, Noel again, Henson, or Lopez when BKN trades him (should be soon), though Lopez would destroy 2017 space.

He gets an unfair rep due to outdated notions about counting stats (rebounds in this case) and their value for big men, as did ending up on the Lakers didn't help his career. There has to be some value in a guy who was an All-Star and one of the best rim protectors in the league just a couple of years ago. 5mil for one year and a back-up slot is a nice bet to see if there is still something in him, even if the NBA is going in another direction, away from plodders like Hibbert.

There is the drawback of him just using us for one year (like, per example, Rondo did with the Kings), playing good and then cashing in but I don't see him as the most likeliest of candidates to use a situation like this. After all, counting stats isn't his strength, he won't get many 10+10s off the bench for us.

With that being said, I wanted to post this song. It's way too harsh, it's totally uncalled for, he's too good of a basketball player but... it is wacky and funny. The Le Batard show has had some gold over the years as far as parody songs are concerned.

good lord, that's hilariously brutal.

my vote for the thread title:

Trash Can - The Roy Hibbert...
Rebound and then Fall Down - The Roy Hibbert...

I'm leaning towards the second one.

Hibbert has the exact same game as vorbis but with >1.5ft more height and slightly fewer Rick Mahorn tendencies.
