Not as the #1, no. Not as he plays now. He's got tons of potential, and when he's healthy he IS a very good player, but he's not a tier-one player and he's not a particularly good defender, so his good but not amazing offense isn't enough. I'm not saying he's a BAD defender, just not a serious impact defender. Lebron and Wade are, Kobe used to be. Kobe, though, is a more effective offensive player and someone like Durant is also a better defender (if not a HUGE impact defender) and a WAY better offensive player.

Melo is... well, Phil said it: he works too slowly and hangs onto the ball a lot. He's coachable on that front, I mean Mike D and Woodson had him working the PnR a little more than usual this year for example but he has sticky hands, you know? He likes to play with the ball, so he's not super-fast to swing it and play the round-and-round-we-go perimeter game and what-not.

I think Melo would make a pretty good #2 with reduced shooting touches. I dunno, I think it's hard to evaluate him because this year is still fresh in everyone's mind and he's WAY better than he played this year. I want to see how he bounces back in 2013 before I REALLY make a judgement but yeah, he's definitely a tier below the offense of guys like healthy Wade, Lebron, Durant, younger Kobe, etc and he's a primary on-ball player, so that's bad news for his title-winning aspirations, IMO.

Agree 100%. I imagine him having a career similar to Paul Pierce. Just needs a great #1 option.

You love how the owner of your favorite team passed over one of the best coaches ever?

I tell you... some Knicks fans deserve to have Dolan in charge of their team.

Except he didn't. Knicks sent third party ambassadors. Phil just wanted to have his ego stroked, and after Larry Brown, Dolan doesn't want to go through that again.

In an "HBO Real Sports" interview that premieres on Tuesday, Jackson tells correspondent Andrea Kremer that Dolan never called - and he was glad.

"I wasn't gonna take that job, that's for sure," said Jackson, who played with the Knicks from 1967 to 1978.

Jackson suggests he has given a good deal of thought to coaching the Knicks - "New York is special," he says - but he dismissed the possibility of returning to Madison Square Garden because the current team is "clumsy."

"What's clumsy mean?" Kremer asked.

"Well, they don't fit together well. (Amare) Stoudemire doesn't fit well with Carmelo. Stoudemire's a really good player. But he's gotta play in a certain system and a way.

"Carmelo has to be a better passer. And the ball can't stop every time it hits his hands," Jackson continued. "They need to have someone come in that can kinda blend that group together."

"But wouldn't you have been the perfect person to come in and blend all that talent together?" Kremer said. "You sort of have a good history of that."

"Yeah," Jackson agreed. "Well, it never happened."

Extremely overrated coach, likes his team handpicked for him, never the type of coach to mentor younger players nor have the patience to watch a team grow. This guy hates a challenge, The current Knicks team while not a championship contender is far from being a basement dweller. I beleive there's only 3 teams that Jackson considers as "worthy" of his service and they are the Bulls, Thunder and the Heat, fact they ain't gonna call Phil, .

I can't respect anyone who is afraid of taking risks or challenges, If Phil thinks he's such a great coach then why not lobby for a job on the bottom dwelling teams like the Raptors of Nets? you know teams that actually needs a lot of hands-on coaching? Too much a challenge huh Phil?

antisthenes wrote:For people trying to badmouth Jackson, by acting like he road the coat tails of great players to championships, take a look at these numbers of his 4 best players:

Shaq:
Years in league/Titles without Jackson: 14- 1

Kobe:
Years in league/Titles without Jackson: 5-0
Years in league/Titles with Jackson: 10-5

Pippen:
Years in league/Titles without Jackson: 8-0
Years in league/Titles with Jackson: 8-6

Jordan:
Years in league/Titles without Jackson: 7-0
Years in league/Titles with Jackson: 8-6

34 combined seasons without Jackson, and only 1 with a championship. Yet, in roughly 18 years he won 11 titles with those guys. Explain to me who rode whose coat tails... Not saying Jackson did it himself, but it's pretty obvious that he made a huge impact.

Jackson is an ideal coach for a stacked roster lead by a superstar on the cusp of being title contenders, in fact he is the ideal coach for a team like the current Thunder and Bulls. But the fact remains, he does not like to take risks on an undeveloped roster full of young players, Jackson does not like the challenge of building a team from the ground-up, let's see him lead a bottom dwelling team(like the Nets) on a championship after a few years of development then we can talk on his greatness.
