Dolan/MSG losing corporate sponsors to Rox over Linsanity

Post#1 » by spaceballer » Wed Aug 8, 2012 4:17 pm

During Linsanity, Maxxis Tires became the first Taiwanese corporate sponsor that signed with Madison Square Garden. Revenue from corporate sponsorships, based on signage inside a team's arena, is not shared with the rest of the league. Acer is leaving, too. Although Acer is international, it is based in Taiwan and has major assets there. I have no idea if Coca-cola is going to continue to pay to run Chinese language signs courtside inside MSG in the hopes that people overseas in Asia see the signs when they air Knicks games.

Taiwan-based tyre manufacturer Maxxis Tires have signed a one-year sponsorship deal with the Houston Rockets NBA franchise, the new team of Taiwanese-American basketball sensation Jeremy Lin.

Maxxis, which backed Lin's previous team the New York Knicks last year, will be entitled to courtside signage on LED boards at the Rockets' home arena, and will serve as presenting sponsor of a promotional giveaway night at some point during the coming season.

At the same time, Maxxis and computer manufacturer Acer declined to renew one-year sponsorship deals with the Knicks.

I think they lost their biggest sponsor (American Express) to the Nets too.

You knew that was going to happen with Lin though. He's like the Tebow of basketball right now.

It's more than just Lin. Sponsors are seeing the Nets as a viable alternative to the Knicks and as a result the Knicks / MSG have seen some of their mainstay sponsors and events jump ship.

Not that you can blame any of the sponsors or event promoters. There's a negative stigma that surrounds the Knicks outside of New York which has only continued to get worse as Dolan's blunders have piled up.

Not surprising, but in defense of the Knicks, these minor sponsorships aren't going to make or break them. What the Knicks need is the other way, to sell regional ads so that they show up abroad, like what Manchester United is doing. It would have been easier with Lin, but now the Rockets will have a huge presence in Asia.

This was one of the big reasons I thought the Knicks made a bad choice w/ not re-upping Lin. He puts butts in seats, and gets you sponsors.

Keeping Lin wasn't going to put more butts in the seats; those seats would of sold out regardless. I do agree that keeping Lin would of given the franchise more sponsors though.

The Knicks simply should of kept Lin because he gives the team another good player and an asset.

This little boy trying to be smart with me, please don't, it's not the road you want to take.

Meh They have been crap for so long and done so many stupid things and made their fanbase suffer for so long that it was bound to bite them in the ass. Little brother grew up.

You don't get wealthy by not giving a sh*t about any sum of money either. I'll go ahead and assume that you're one of those people that reads a Forbes article once a year and thinks he understands how wealthy people think?

More proof that Lin is just a brand, marketing gimmick, novelty act, etc. You sign Lin for the international sponsor revenue, not because he's going to help you win a championship. I like that the Knicks are starting to care more about winning than money.
