Atlanta isn't taking on Curry's contract. Why is that so difficult to understand?
Some other combination of Knicks' players is fine, but not Curry.

well as useless as curry may be, him being an expiring makes him actually valuable ... very valuable to some teams who want to get rid of a contract they don't want anymore.
But in this situation you aren't trading Curry for a contract that the other team doesn't want anymore...you are trading him for the franchise player. So not only do you have Joe Johnson leaving Atlanta for New York, you have the Hawks taking back Eddy Curry in the process. WTF?

Same reason that a team took Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol? An expiring in Curry and a young player in Wilson Chandler.
Umm...Memphis was doing a salary dump. Memphis didn't want to pay the last 3 years of Gasol's contract, so they took back an expiring contract. If Atlanta wants salary cap relief, doing a sign and trade of JJ for Curry is not the answer. LOL. It means they took an additional 1 year of salary, because Joe Johson's contract just expired.

In exchange for players already under contract (e.g., Marvin Williams) if they re-sign JJ.

For Joe Johnson? How does that even make sense?

Look, Joe is going to take the super-max and then in a year or two he will get traded to a true contender. This contract is bound to get traded in the future....matter of fact I bet Atlanta is almost banking on that. They will make 1 more run at it and then if nothing happens, they will dump JJ for expiring contracts/late first round picks next year.

Although I agree that the Hawks probably wont want to take back Curry, and now that Phoenix has renounced Amare they cant do a S&T as they cant pay him over the cap, I'd like to point out that Curry's contract isnt an undesirable object for Atlanta to have. Whilst it provides no salary relief (as has already been pointed out) It does provide two things; An expiring to be used at some other point during the season to get an actual decent player and a trade exception for the difference between the two salaries (depending on who else is included in the deal). So it is not out of the realms of possibility that a deal could get done.

I thought the Johnson deal was done? Where is this coming from?
And I don't believe it'll happen for a second. NY likes to dream big.

Re: Update:NY going for JJ/Amare/Lebron
For Jared Jeffries ($6.9mill) Houston received the following:
• The right to swap 2011 first round picks (top-1 protected) with New York
• New York's 2012 first round pick (top-5 protected)
• Jordan Hill
New York will need to provide some value Atlanta can use now since they have no future first round picks that would be considered appealing right now. Eddy Curry ($11.2mill) who is currently wanted by the law offers nothing to an ownership like the ASG. Danilo Gallinari would be the perfect fit for Atlanta and would need to be included, because I doubt New York would want to have Mike Bibby's salary take up $5.5 million of their cap space next season, and $6.2 million the following season.

Its impossible for this pairing to happen unless they all take major paycuts. Two of those players are rumored to be going for the money above everything else, so someone explain to me why anyone's buying this?

So they are going to give up their franchise player for the luxury of having to pay Eddy Curry $11-12 million next year in the hopes of maybe trading him for another player that is on an equally bad contract?

Re: Update:NY going for JJ/Amare/Lebron
This is something I said days ago. The whole idea that the Knicks were already giving up on Lebron and targeting Joe Johnson was never true. They were always thinking if they can get a sign and trade with a max free agent and sell Lebron on 2 other guys he be much easier to get.
People have to remember Curry expiring is valuable. I keep hearing why would teams want Curry. Have you not seen what happens in the NBA the last decade. You can trade expiring contracts at the deadline for just about anything. If Chris Paul is traded at the deadline my bet a big expiring contract with be part of a major deal. If Phoenix sucks and they are looking to rebuild an expiring contract will probably be a big part of what sends Steve Nash to another team. Danny Granger, Al Jefferson, Tony Parker any of these guys traded an expiring contract might be a big part of what comes back. If your one of these teams you take Curry contract because it could help you make a big trade later.

The more I think about it, if the Hawks are forced to consider sending Joe to the Knicks in a S&T, swapping Curry for Bibby isn't *that* bad.
BIbby is owed about the same amount of money over the next two years as Curry is owed this season.

Any team that wants cap relief would take a trade exception over an expiring contract, it lowers their payroll immediately. This is especially important, if they are over the luxury tax threshold. An expiring contract still counts in the luxury tax calculations for 1 season.
