Spinoff: Where are the good Wings?
Reading the guard thread had me wondering where the good wings?
Yeah there are the superstars, Kobe, Wade, Durant, Lebron, Melo, Roy. Then guys like Pierce, Granger but after that there really aren't many all star caliber wings out there these days. There haven't been many from the past few draft classes with star potential either.
2010- Evan Turner
2009- Tyreke Evans (I think he'll grow into a wing), Terrence Williams perhaps
2008- None (don't believe in Mayo or Gordon)
2007- Kevin Durant
2006- Brandon Roy
2005- Granger, Ellis
There have been more C's than swings from recent drafts
2010: Demarcus Cousins, Derrick Favors, Greg Monroe
2009: None (don't see much in Hasheem Thabeet)
2008: Brook Lopez
2007: Greg Oden, Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Marc Gasol
2006: None (don't see much in Bargs)
2005: Andrew Bogut, Andrew Bynum
It seems like PG and C are getting deeper than SG and SF because there is more young talent at those spots than there is a the wings.

Lol? The crop of SFs/SG are much better than the crop of C's as a whole and its not even close.princeofpalace wrote:Reading the guard thread had me wondering where the good wings?

Not from the last few draft classes, which is what I was very obviously referring to
There are some very average swings out there but not many good ones have been coming into the league.
When you look at the crop of young PGs and young bigs you're impressed
But when you look at the crop of young wings out there, there aren't many guys to get excited over.

So, what have Gasol, Bynum and Oden done exactly what makes them so much better than Gordon or Mayo?

They have all played better than Gordon and Mayo
Odens only knock is health. When he is healthy he is easily a more dominant player than Gordon and Mayo- these two undersized SG put up decent stats but don't actually have much of an impact on the game. Oden has shown that he can seriously impact the game on the defensive end. Oden is easily better IMO.
Bynum also has health issues but he has been a major contributor on a championship caliber team. Put him on a lesser team like LAC or MEM and his stats become more impressive than Gordon/Mayo. Hell, Bynums production now is already better than both Gordon and Mayos. Im not sure why you are confused.
As for Gasol. He is on the same team as Mayo. He is more of a defensive anchor, is a very good rebounder, more efficient scorer. Mayo and Gordon can score in greater volume but that really is about it.

I seriously thought this was going to be about chicken wings when I opened the thread.

Re: Spinoff: Where are the good Wings?
Yeah, for some reason I thought this was a spin-off of the burger thread over on the Chicago board.
Traditionally, the 2-3 spots are the easiest to fill, as a lot of times you can just put a specialist there and things will be fine. Marginal talents at those spots tend to pick up real NBA skills a little more consistently for whatever reason and you'll find someone serviceable there without much difficulty.
Things in the NBA are cyclical. We're in a bit of a PG/PF phase right now with prospects. It might be premature to close the books on some of the recent drafts. A player like James Harden, for example, might improve in the next few years into a great player.
