Can good players shoot too much?

Post#1 » by FisherSucks » Mon Mar 7, 2011 12:09 am

In 1966 Wilt Chamberlain attempted 25.2 field goals per game. He led the 76ers in True Shooting% by a comfortable margin. In other words, Wilt was the team’s most efficient scorer and he shot it the most. But did he shoot too much? This idea might seem counterintuitive; Wouldn’t a team want its most efficient player to shoot more, not less?

Surprisingly, less can be better.

Doubt everyone really reads into columns kinda regarding overly simplified examples.

It's possible but it really doesn't tell the whole story.

Given the team's situation I don't think Kobe overshoots, neither did Iverson or MJ. Maybe on a single game basis sometimes but in the long run, those team required them to shoot to keep the offense going.

Wilt's situation was probably the same.

Btw I don't really think he shoots too much. Just thought I'd do some abstract fishing.

There are really two important things to consider here:

1.) If they're more efficient than the team as a whole and they can create for themselves, it's pretty obvious they're usually the better option. I would say, however, that they're shooting too much if they don't take advantage of MORE efficient opportunities that they indirectly create by getting more defensive attention.

2.) Based on raw TS%, an incomplete look at the stats would suggest that someone like Joel Pryzbilla shooting 75% should be your 1st option, but that's not really how the game works. Sometimes you can get open looks for a guy like that, but sometimes you're going to need a guy who can shoot 45% for the inevitable 'imperfect' possessions.
