Calculus +Physics the arc of Dirk's Rainbow shot from Game 5

Post#1 » by Import » Fri Jun 10, 2011 8:54 am

Can someone post the youtube video and gif of Dirk's rainbow shot?

I'm going to use Calculus (with some Physics) to determine the arc of the shot.

-X will be the horizontal distance from Dirk's spot at the 3 point line to the out of bounds line (under the basket).

-Y will be the vertical distance from the floor to the top of the arena.

-The arc of the shot will be the slope/tangent line/linear. The arc will be divided into a semi-circle (where I will guestimate the diameter and half it into the radius)

-unknown variables that I need to research: room temperature for a indoor basketball game (T), the normal speed at which a basketball travels * 2 (professional basketball player) which will be labeled (S).

y=f(x) imitates-----> y=g(x)

more to come...

------

Anymore Math nerds here can join me in calculating Dirk Nowitzski's EPIC shot from Game 5.

Thanks!

If I were you, I would find the following:

X- COMPONENT OF THE ACCELERATION: 0

Y- COMPONENT OF THE ACCELERATION: UNKNOWN

X- COMPONENT OF THE INITIAL VELOCITY: COS OF THE ANGLE AT WHICH HE SHOT THE BALL * INITIAL VELOCITY

Y- COMPONENT OF THE INITIAL VELOCITY: SIN OF THE ANGLE AT WHICH HE SHOT THE BALL * INITIAL VELOCITY

TIME OF FLIGHT: DISPLACEMENT- TIME EQUATION USING THE Y- COMPONENT OF THE EQUATION

HORIZONTAL RANGE: DISPLACEMENT- TIME EQUATION USING THE X- COMPONENT OF THE EQUATION

HEIGHT: (V-final)^2 = (V-initial)^2 + 2(acceleration)(displacement)

TIME AT PEAK: (V-final) = (V-initial) + 2(acceleration)(time of flight)

VELOCITY AT THE END OF FLIGHT: MAGNITUDE AND DIRECTION

HOPE THAT HELPS!

You're making this waaay too complicated.

You can estimate his release point and distance from the basket easily. Time how long the ball is in the air. Use a simple ballistics formula and you'll get an accurate answer.

Why does there need to be a point? Professional sports don't really have a point, talking about them online doesn't really have a point, and yet here we are anyway.

I can't tell who had more arc on their shot Dirk Nowitzki or OJ Mayo?
OJ Mayo , Michael Jordan , Allen Iverson.
