Besiktas to pursue Kobe

After agreeing with New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams on a contract to join his Turkish team during the NBA lockout, Besiktas coach Ergin Ataman declared his next target: Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.

Ataman will travel to the United States with Besiktas management officials next week to trumpet the signing of Williams, and wants to arrange a meeting with Bryant and Bryant’s agent, Rob Pelinka, he told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday afternoon.

“After we signed Deron, we started to look around and find a friend of his, find other NBA stars, who want to come over and play with us,” Ataman told Yahoo! Sports. “If Kobe wants to play with Deron in Istanbul, we can discuss this.”

“We cannot give him the same money as he gets from the NBA, but if the money isn’t everything in this, and Kobe wants to play during the lockout, wants to play with Deron Williams, we can find some deal on the money,” Ataman said.

“Kobe is the player in Europe with the most fans, with the biggest name. I believe that Kobe is a basketball player, and I’m a basketball coach, and that this is a big club, and maybe he can come play.

“Why not?”

Besiktas signed Allen Iverson(notes) for the past season, but he arrived out of shape and an injury cut short his season with the Turkish team.

Besiktas has a recent history of struggling to pay players money owed them. FIBA ordered Besiktas to pay Americans Lonny Baxter and Kevin Fletcher $180,000 and $178,000, respectively, for back payments.

Bryant signed a major endorsement deal with Turkish Airlines last year.

DO IT. Then D-Will opts out of NJ and signs with LA for the MLE or equivalent once the lockout ends lol

while over there, Kobe makes him an under the table deal as well where he gives Deron half his 30M contract for the next few years since he doesn't need it and then D-Will would still be making close to the max. Brilliant.

Only issue I have with this is if the team starts to dominate then around playoff time or mid season they leave. The team would collapse and it would just be embarrassing. Though I'd rather have nba players play in europe just so the owners know the players can wait.

Kobe could just hold out and wait for Real Madrid or Barcelona to pay him and Pau big bucks to play together in Europe. I'm sure they can afford more than Besiktas.

Not sure when the Spanish league starts though.

The funny thing about this , Besiktas would not care if they left mid season, they mostly do this for fans, selling some jerseys and advertisement. They could leave after 2 months and Besiktas would have gained what they aimed for.

Also I am not sure Barca or Madrid would sign such deals that would let them go whenever the lockout ends. They are competing for Euroleague and they cannot gamble on this.

I like this idea the best. Definitely a win-win situation.

The armenian community in Istanbul, which i guess is a lot bigger than the one in NY, would be damn happy about it...if they care about basketball :D

If Kobe really wants to play in a different league. A Chinese team will make a counter offer.

Former NBA scrub Quincy Douby just recently got a $2 million deal.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nike was advising him to do this as well.

Zero chance Kobe wastes some of the remaining miles left in his legs to go play in Turkey.
