What happened to Steve Francis?

This guys was one of the best young players in the early 2000's.

I was just looking up his stats, in his prime years:

19.9/6.5/6.9/1.8, .451 FG%, .396 3PT%
21.6/6.4/7.0/1.2, .417 FG%, .324 3PT%
21.0/6.2/6.2/1.7, .435 FG%, .354 3PT%
16.6/6.2/5.5/1.8, .403 FG%, .292 3PT%
21.3/7.0/5.8/1.4, .423 FG%, .299 3PT%

AVERAGES: 20.1/6.5/6.3/1.6, .426 FG%, .333 3PT%

Thats a pretty nice looking prime for a 6'3 guard. He was a great rebounder, got better at passing as his career progressed, shot pretty well from the field and from distance, and was a solid defensive player (his DRTG was pretty low too). After his 5 year prime, he never had a 15/5/5 or better season again, and hasn't played since 2008. I would think if he continued on this path, he could've been a 25/8/5/2 type player.

So what happened?

Loss of athleticism, injured, lack of confidence and lack of freedom on the court.

Oh, and the loss of this guy!

Low 40s FG% and low 30s 3pt% are not really good percentages...but it is a shame his career really fell off.

Even when it ain't about Derrick Rose it becomes about him.

I can see this happening to Westbrook.

What happened to Francis?

Had a great career in Houston.. had an awesome first year in Orlando statistically... Hockey guy GM trades his best friend, Mobley, away for Christie... Francis gets sad and kicks a cameraman... defenses started figuring out that Francis likes to shoot going to his left, and to attack the basket going to his right... Magic trades him to NY... Francis becomes injured... him and Marbury don't mesh well in the back-court... Francis gets healthy, puts up a random 30+pt game in MSG... plays well again for a good stretch... gets injured again... gets traded... ends up back in Houston... their head coach hates him, he doesn't want to use Francis... Francis shows up out of shape at practices (that's what the coach says | truth is that there was a logjam at PG)... Francis ends up with the Grizzlies... he gets waived... winds up poking his nose in the crowd on national tv... there you go... shame

I will admit that his time in Houston (2nd stint) was kind of baffling... he was only 30 years old; and Francis, T-Mac, Scola, and Yao would have been fun to watch, if the coach wasn't such a prick (Adleman)

Yeah I remeber the hype of him going back to Houston, and if he would've had a coach who would've liked him and played him, I think he could've resurrected his career.

But, the first mistake was trading Mobley. If the Rockets hadn't who knows how long Franchise would've been good.

except derrick has a great work ethic and knows how to fit within a system.
francis was just a talented streetballer who made it into the NBA. even when he was putting up good stats he was still playing a streetball game.
i dont see any parallels b/t he and rose other than both being super athletic guards.

Oh my God, you're right. Coach's fault all the way.

Time will tell.

We already know he had someone else take his SAT exam. Apparently he didn't have the "work ethic" to get into college.

I get the strange feeling you are serious...which is troubling. Do you have any reason to believe they are destined for the same fates?

Rose is better than Francis but Francis was easily the more entertaining player...
