New Name for NO?

Postby ElectricMayhem on Sat Apr 14, 2012 12:19 am

Tom Benson wants a more culturally/geographically significant name for the New Orleans Hornets. I agree, as I've never understood retaining names that were clearly made for a different city or region (Lakers, Hornets, Jazz, etc.) What would you like to see the name be?

Ideas:
New Orleans Voodoo - After the Haitian population and cultural mystique surrounding it. I like the name and think a pretty awesome brand could be created from it, but could see complaints from exoticizing a group of people. EDIT: Someone mentioned it's the name of the Arena League team, so it's probably a no-go.

New Orleans Desire - After A Streetcar Named Desire. City Specific Literary Allusion + Core Component to any athlete's success + more carnal meanings = versatile in marketability.

Bourbon Street Brawlers - It combines two things the NBA doesn't want it's image to be. As a compromise, they could change it to the Bourbon Street Ballers. There, now there's only one.

New Orleans Ragin' Cajuns - Yes, it's stolen from an area university, but it's still a fun name.

New Orleans Jazz - Doubt it could happen, but it should happen. In the end, Utah has created too much of a legacy with the name from the Stockton/Malone years to give up the name, even though it has no connection whatsoever with Utah.

New Orleans Hurricanes - To pay respect to the lives lost in Hurricane Katrina. Probably too sensitive of a subject to happen. You'd certainly need your finger on the city's pulse to truly judge whether this name would be considered empowering or a kick in the nads.

New Orleans Big Easy - After the nickname.

Feel free to add your own ideas or bash these ones.

Bonus Question. Assuming New Orleans changes their name, can/should the Bobcats take back the Hornets name?

Sadly the name that would best fit them would be the Jazz but obviously can't happen.

I think the New Orleans Krewe has a nice ring to it, but that might be a BIT obscure to the casual fan. We have Knickerbockers and Clippers in the two biggest markets, though, so who knows?

^^better yet: New Orleans Jazz&Blues

but seriously: how about New Orleans Bourbons. That sounds (literally) great.

The Bourbons of NOLA!

I saw a post where someone recommended the name and donating a small fraction of the initial season's ticket sales to related charities. Miami has also been hit by fatal hurricanes. We often name our sports teams out of respect of forces greater than that which we can control. Would it be difficult to work with this name? Yes, I said as much in the original post. But I don't think it's as far gone as your condescending emoticon implied.
