Don't know if you ever head of this guy named Michael Jordan but he might have had something to do with NBA's dramatic increase in popularity.

If you think the players are overpaid, where do you think the money should go instead? The owners, the management, the concessions people? Or do you think that tickets are overpriced? They're set at the price where people will continue to pay.

It's simple economics people, actors and athletes are paid a just sum considering the huge amounts of money they bring in. If anything it could be argued that the super-superstars like Kobe and Lebron are underpaid.

There is no comparison to be made here with normals jobs like doctors etc. None. Anyone who thinks that there is incredibly foolish.

It's funny how many people become 'Communists' and 'Socialists' and 'Liberal flunkies' when it comes to discussing salaries of athletes. Have this as a general discussion, and you'd have an army of people blathering on and on about the free market. At least athletes actually compete to earn what they get, and don't work under a rigged or fixed system like many who exploit a so called free market.
To them, it's like everyone wants the money they are never going to make. amluvinit2 on the tea party..

The people "exploiting the free market" are the ones paying the salaries!

I still can't believe that most agree that it is okay for Garnett to have made almost 300 million in wages :o

Super star players are underpaid. Lebron James is grossly underpaid.

Rashard Lewis is overpaid.

You could probably argue that most end-of-the-bench players are overpaid as well.

It's all about the money you bring into your team and market.

What's the problem with it? He's probably brought in closer to $500 million in revenue to the Timberwolves and Celtics over the past 16 years.

Of course not. They're elite, irreplaceable talent. Imagine replacing the current 400 players by the next best 400 players - no one would pay to watch that. KG is one of the best of all time in his field, a guy like him generated billions of dollars over the course of his career for Minnesota, Boston, Nike, Adidas and the NBA. It doesn't matter whether you think what he does is important. He does something that people want to pay to see and enjoy and he does it better than almost anyone else.

sammyvine wrote:I just saw that Garnett has taken $300m in wages alone. You look at what the likes of Kobe, Shaq, Lebron have earned throughout their NBA Career etc.....

I mean that is outstanding when you compare their salary's to doctor's etc...

# of active nba players vs. # of active physicians

cmon
it's 1000000x harder to get into the nba than it is to become a doctor.
of course you're going to get paid way more.

82 games + playoffs + offseason training...i dont think you understand how much work is involved in being a professional athlete. add in the fact that the career of an nba player is pretty short, again, it makes sense that they are compensated the way they are.

When you think that Brad Pitt makes 25 - 30 per movie... 25 is a fair amount considering it's a year round job...
