Woj: Phoenix in talks to acquire Rudy Gay

The Grizzlies have been shopping Gay to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said.
There's no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving Gay include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said.
In an effort to avoid paying luxury tax in the short term, as well as get off the $16.8 million and $19.3 million owed Gay in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, new Memphis management has aggressively shopped Gay. The Grizzlies have made proposals on Gay to several teams, front-office sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Wonder if this is wishful thinking on Memphis's part. The Woj article implies they'd be getting Dudley and multiple firsts, which looks mighty optimistic to me given Gay's contract.

It would be a pretty good trade for memphis. Save money, dudley's an awesome role player and they pick up the lakers pick for an inefficient chucker/mediocre defender Gay.

My money would be Dudley/Beasley/1st round pick or 2 with some form of protection.
As the article says, Memphis has had talks with a number of teams. Makes it seem they're shopping him to everyone, this maybe what they are asking, not what they'll get or what Phoenix offered.

In seriousness though, what an odd deal. Grizzlies need someone in the mold of a "stopper" at the 3. Gay is making 16 mil, Dudley is making 4. What other contracts are they taking? Yes the Suns are 6 mil under the cap, but 6+4 = 10. that means the Griz need to take on about 6 mil extra in salary. Beas is a negative value right now. Frye has been hurt.

works, Suns get their "star" for Dudley and change, Memphis gets a better PER player than Gay in Dudley(Hollinger gets excited) and some expiring contracts, also gets under the luxtax.

Yep. Total waste of money for Phoenix. Gay won't make them a contender or even a playoff team at this point. So they're going to trade for a "name" player who'll make them good enough to get a crappy pick but not good enough to make the playoffs. That's such a typical Suns/Sarver move, more interested in keep butts in seats than actually winning anything of consequence.
