Will Brandon Jennings ever realize his potential?

Post#1 » by Cigamodnalro » Sun Jan 13, 2013 3:33 pm

The guy has a world of talent, but will he ever be able to harness it? He doesn't seem to play within his game at all, and the 40.9% FG% he is shooting this season is close to the best of his (young) NBA career. Monta Ellis cannot be a good influence on the guy's development, at least from an offensive perspective.

Does he sign somewhere besides Milwaukee and grow as a player after this summer? Does he re-up and finally put it together? Or does he remain the same selfish floor-general and erratic shooter he has been to date?

Let me put it this way: as a Bucks fan, I hope we draft MCW. Jennings does not have the mentality to be a topflight pg. Simply put, he wants his points too much.

He has the talent but off the court he comes off as a high school kid who is obsessed with "swag". I don;t see this guy ever reaching his potential, he just doesn't have that mentality.

He is what he is, a terrible scoring threat and otherwise unremarkable. He'd probably look at least a little better in a system where the coach didn't just let him do his own thing, of course, but he's not really that good a player.

He's next on the list of guys you can't believe actually scored 50 points in an NBA game.

He will follow the same career path as Jamal Crawford.

I bet Monta Ellis and him leave Milwaukee, if the Bucks ever get tired of mediocrity.

I would be highly impressed with Jennings if he managed to do that. Crawford has found a great role with the Clippers, was 6MOY for the Hawks a few years back and is actually a really good FT shooter who has never really struggled with efficiency to the same extent as has Jennings. He's a better player, by far, and has been since early on in his career (earlier than Jennings is into his career now, at that).

is there any type of evaluation that is more subjective then "potential"?

I'd argue Jennings has just about reached his potential and that seeing any more potential in him is seeing a mirage

Just for the sake of the Devil's Advocate argument...

Jennings COULD find a situation where his coach scales back his shooting volume, puts him alongside a decent PnR big man with a 17-foot J, arranges some spacing shooters around him at the 2 and 3 and then has Jennings do kind of what Darren Collison is doing for the Mavs right now.

That would be a more effective role for him, and even though his raw PPG would come down, it might be seen as him realizing his potential a little more because he's fitting his role to talent in that situation and acting as a net positive contributor to the team's offense.

EDIT: As opposed to being an albatross, which is his current state.

He's already realized his potential. As long as that brain is still attached to that body, his room to get better is limited.

I think Jennings thinks there is only potential in the amount of points HE scores. Regardless of what happens with the team, he wants to get his. He has the potential to be a solid PG in the right situation, and MIL ain't it.

He needs to go to a team with some vet bigs and a pass first point guard who can help get his head straight. Right now, he is too selfish and too wrapped up in his own swag. And it probably doesn't help that he is playing next to Ellis. Their games combined are obscenely redundant. What were the Bucks thinking?

Jennings is a me-first player. I get that he can pass the ball, but I don't feel like thats his first choice.

If Jennings can ever fully embrace a team concept, he could be a much better player - just look at Lance Stephenson. Until then, I think most of his stats are hollow.

As much as he chucks it, I believe it.

I'm not high on this kid. At all. I think MIL needs to look to unload him before summer, for sure. He's a high volume shooter with a low percentage. He doesn't seem to care about winning as much as "getting his." There's a good reason why the Bucks didn't pick up his option.
