Cavs-Griz trade;Ellignton,Speights,Selby for Jon Leuer,pick

Post#22 » by seorang » Tue Jan 22, 2013 2:24 pm

The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a multiplayer trade with Cleveland Cavaliers, slicing more than $6 million off their payroll to get them under the luxury tax threshold, league sources told ESPN.com.

A trade call to finalize the deal is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Grizzlies would send big man Marreese Speights, guard Wayne Ellington and guard Josh Selby to the Cavs for big man Jon Leuer. There are also believed to be a future draft pick involved in the deal.

Reducing payroll both short- and long-term has been a goal of the new Grizzlies ownership and led to other trade talks involving Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph over the past several weeks.

Speights averages 6.5 points and 4.7 rebounds as a key big man off the bench for the Grizzlies but makes $4.2 million this season and has a player option at $4.5 million for next season. The Grizzlies owe Gay, Randolph and Marc Gasol nearly $50 million alone next year.

Ellington is averaging 5.5 points in 40 games off the bench.

The Cavs were able to make the deal because they had more than $10 million in cap space in which to absorb Speights. That would likely mean the Grizzlies would receive a trade exception of more than $6 million that would be good for a year.

Selby has only played in 10 games this season, averaging two points. Leuer has played in nine games, averaging 2.4 points.

That's the end of the Rudy Gay trade rumours then?

uhhhh... So we can expect the starters to play 48mins a game? Those were the 2 best players off the bench

So we have no bench now

Tony Wroten and Leuer! And then Pondexter when he's recovered from his knee injury. They can still sign players to 10-day contracts

Im happy to see a trade has finally gone down. Feels like there has been no player movement this season.

I agree man. Even though I don't care too much about either team, this is like a sigh of relief for me. I'm just hoping for more to come.

Wait till the trade deadline. Trade deadline 2008 was a pretty eventful one (Pau to LA, Shaq to Phoenix, even the Spurs got in by trading for Kurt Thomas).

Steve Kyler tweeted that the pick that the Cavs get is a 2015 first round selection with top 5 protection.

Great job, Chris Grant.

Well they were all set to blow up core members of one of the better teams in the league last week, so I suppose this is an advancement.

If I were a Memphis fan though I'd be beginning to wish for the good ole days of Heisley.

This disappoints me Memphis once again being my dark horse for the playoffs. I understand that they are concerned about their finances, however, trading a guy who earns 4mil and had an important role on the team for the unproven Leuer sounds very cheap.

I thought that Speights fitted in very well in Memphis, I just loved the way he yapped to DeAndre last year in round 1 after every jumpshot he made. He's a rugged banger that definitely will prove himself in Cleveland. Leuer seems so white and could look so out of place at Memphis... I guess Darrell Arthur will play even more now.

I get the whole "pushing them under the tax line" thing, but I'm looking at this strictly from the basketball point of view. In my opinion, they seriously weakened their bench and at the end of the day - who cares about money, if you have a shot at the title!?

Honestly if it means they don't blow up the team who has a legitimate shot at contending for the next 3 years then it was a good trade for both sides.

I'd rather give away a more recent pick than the 2015 pick (Zebo and Gay can opt out) and it's only top 5 protected. However if that's the price to get the deal done it makes sense. Grizz aren't going to want to add a first rounder's salary anyways.
