Scal takes on challengers

Postby BattleTested on Tue Jan 22, 2013 11:26 pm

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball- ... --nba.html

Basically, Scalabrine got tired of the notion that any weekend warrior could beat him so they had a competition, people sent in their tryout tapes and 4 of them got picked to play Scal.

These guys weren't bad players by any means. One of them played at Syracuse just last year. But it's pretty amazing the staggering amount of difference between a 40 year old NBA journeyman and the best guy at your local gym.

Spoiler alert - Scal ends up winning the 4 games by a combined total of 44-6.

Celtics need to try to get him out of retirement, maybe he can save their season.

You can't stop the White Mamba, you can only hope to contain him.

Hah, that's pretty amusing. Sometimes i don't think we realize just how huge the talent gap is between the average joe and the scrubbiest of the nba's scrubs is.

To be fair... as a Mass resident I can say that Boston is not exactly a hotbed of Basketball Talent. It's no surprise to me that our best player possibly ever Nerlens Noel has virtually no offensive game to speak of but is a next level defender.

We Mass Holes love to hate.

scal actually has a mean triple threat game. i can imagine he'd be a beast 1 on 1.

Lol he actually looked sucky if you watched him.

It was obvious he was going to win by a lot but he's really slow for NBA player (his opponents just didn't play good defense and bit on pump fakes) and he missed tons of jumpers/layups that an NBA player should make given his size advantage.

Interesting rule set. Hard for short guys without elite athleticism to get a shot over/ drive by a 6-8/6-9 guy with only 10 seconds. Of course if the shot clock was longer all Scal had to do was post them and shoot layups and win 11-0 haha.

Obviously he's an NBA player and immensely talented/skilled but that first game (the guy who played on 'Cuse last year) basically just told me that there are definitely a good amount of college dudes that can beat him if they have the size.

scalabrine is retired, keep that in mind. Obviously andrew wiggins and jabari parker could beat him

Well, for the people saying that there are college-level players that can beat him, let's keep in mind that he's a 34 year old who's retired from the league. He's not at his best in terms of NBA skill and game shape. If he was still playing (or at least practicing, because he wasn't actually playing), it would probably have been 44-0. I'd say the only college guys that could beat him are the ones who have futures in the NBA themselves.

The talent gap between him, a perennial NBA benchwarmer, and one of the best players at a local gym is pretty huge.

The first guy is from my town and we play at the same gym. Usually different days/times but I've played a couple games with him. Had no idea he sat on the bench @ Syracuse though.
