Thing is if boston just said : Rondo broke his hand in a fortuite fall, something that can happen to anyone anytime, nobody would question it, it would probably be the truth even if the fall was doing something he's not supposed to, and they would avoid the ridicule if the truth comes out...

Most of the time, the easiest path is the truth.
