I hope they give him one regardless of what he wants.

Duncan has to confirm he's retiring first though. NBA players usually don't say their retiring at the beginning of the season like baseball players though. They usually call it quits at the very end

Of course Kobe was the most popular player of the 2000s, it isn't even arguable. Great player, obsessed with his image in the media, plays for the Lakers, and scores points in bunches(the most appealing part of basketball for most people).

1. Kobe
2. Lebron
3. Iverson
4. Carter
5. Shaq

But take it from someone who grew up in the 00's, in terms of popularity it was

1. Kobe
2. Iverson
3. Doesn't even matter

and there's no disputing that.

Vince Carter led the league in All-Star voting 4 X times in the 00s.
Kobe lead the league 1 X tunes in the 00s.
Iverson NEVER led the league.

Rob Diaz wrote:Lol, Duncan is probably the last player that would ever have a "farewell tour". He's easily the least likely of all superstars in the history of the NBA, at least.

He has spent virtually his entire career purposefully being boring, not giving interviews, hasn't had any national commercials since very early in his career(just HEB commercials for the past X amount of years), etc.

I'd be surprised if Duncan even tells anybody(outside of people very close to him) that he's retiring before he actually does it. It'll probably be after a Spurs title or after a playoff exit in a subtle, post-game press conference or interview IMO.

That Kobe, "Derek Jeter" farewell tour should be nice, though.

I agree. Duncan is one of those guys like John Stockton, who will retire and just drop off the face of the Earth.

And like Stockton, he'll never be forgotten.
I sure as hell will enjoy every game he'll play this season, and the day he retires will be a tough one for all spurs fans. It'll be hard not to get emotional...

Nah. He's going to dodge the question for most of the season and then retire quietly without all the fanfare. That's Duncan in a nutshell.

Lol...every Laker fan has came in here to say how great Kobe is and didn't really give a response to the OP. :D Duncan will say that he's going to retire at the end of whatever season it is. I'd imagine it's ring or retire this year. However, if he can keep up his ridiculous level of play at his age, why not keep playing? Didn't Stockton do the same?

As for the whole Kobe debate...Kobe is the face of the 00's. Dude balled out, incredibly great player. Wowed the crowd with a stab at Wilt's 100 points record, won rings on rings on one of the most popular teams in the NBA, and on top of all that he was the next great shooting guard since Jordan. He was the future GOAT that everyone marveled at and every fan wanted to bandwagon behind. That's why I'm a Lakers fan at least.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

First off, 81 points... How can you doubt him... Thats more then some teams score an entire game

I don't think Duncan will have a season long farewell tour.
Some people expected him to retire after last season.
He hasn't shown any decline yet. He can play several more years.
And when he is done, he will be done, and let us know after he is done

But back to the subtopic,
Kobe was a monster in the 2000's
USA Celtics in full effect. Amazing chemistry building experience right there for the main core of the team

Proceeds to finish 7th and shames the entire nation!

Tim Duncan deserves a Derek Jeter-like farewell tour, in my opinion.

Duncan will never, ever announce his retirement at the end of any season.

He will go out with an injury. Because thats the only thing that will stop him from being effective.

My guess is he will announce his retirement after a season, not before

That's how it should be. Why celebrate someone's narrative instead of the team.

I don't know anyone who thinks Tim Duncan is the face of the 00's era.

Agreed, and it's a damn shame.

No, because he probably don't want it.

Kobe and LeBron are the most famous players, not sure if that equates to most popular, since for most people on here at least liking one of them means hating the other.
