Kevin Love - 5 yrs/110 million - hate on Love all you want as a player, but IMO, 22 million is a really bargain contract when the 2017-18 cap kicks in when it's a 108 million dollar cap
Jimmy Butler - 5 yrs/95 million
Danny Green - 4 yrs/45 million

Albatross Contracts
Tristan Thompson - 5(?) yrs/80 million - haven't seen the years, but if it's 5 years, then it's 16 million a year which is still gross.
DeMarre Carroll - 4 yrs/60 million - I'm sorry, even with the new cap, I still think 15 million a year is asking too much for Carroll, he looked really good at the end of the year and in the playoffs, but I'm still not sold on him in Toronto.

I'm not up on the specifics of the upcoming ballooning cap but weren't all of these signings made under the understanding that the market has changed? There's much, much more money to go around. Subsequently, huge contracts like these will be the norm, no? Given that, isn't it premature to define what is or what isn't an albatross contract?

tyson chandler is a bad contract. solid value for 2 years except it's 2 years too long

Middleton was a steal. Locked up until he's 28 for 14 million per year. He's one of the best young 3 and D players in the league and looks like he's only going to improve. His deal is going to look like an absolute bargain by next season.

The only teams getting good deals are either 1) Signings stars (Love, Kawhi, Butler), because stars are all underpaid relative to their peers, or 2) Trading for existing contracts (Splitter, Ilyasova, etc.), because almost all old contracts are crazy ass bargains compared to this tidal wave of nonsensical signings.

TT is not an albatross.

First, to be an albatross a contract has to limit a teams ability now or in the future. Cleveland is so far over, even without it, that the deal has no ramifications other than Gilbert having to write a check (which is also a non issue).

Second, TT hasn't signed a deal yet. There's no reason to believe this rumor is any more accurate than those reports suggesting Love would be visiting the Lakers later this week. Will be interesting to see how much he gets paid.

The good: Butler, Love, Dragic, Leonard, lillard, AD, and soon to be Aldridge. Atleast these guys are stars

The bad: mediocre players getting 12+mil per while doing nothing to move the arrow for their teams

I'll rename the thread, because CLE has money floating everywhere so technically it isn't a killer. And yes, I put it there based on the hearsay so far.

They're all pretty much albatross

I haven't seen one good contract signed yet. The theme this off season seems to be - cap is going up and I want to get overpaid!

Danny is a nice steal for the Spurs, could see him getting 2 or 3 extra per year from a desperate team.

Carroll could look quite horrible, I love the guy, but at this price, you must have a full team around him, and in toronto I just can't see it.

Middleton has been one of the best signings of the day. Easily could have gotten the max but instead is at 14 mil per year. After the cap increases, however, that is comparable to a 10 mil per year in today's dollars.

Sure, here's my thinking:

I've been preaching the high contract market for six months now... maxes for Middleton, Green, etc... but this particular contract is excessive, even in this economic environment.

Yeah, he's a solid defender, but he's only been a starter for two years, averaging 12 points, 5.5 boards, 1.7 assists, 1.4 steals in just under 32 minutes a game. Low turnovers, but that's because he doesn't create anything off the dribble at all, just shots and quick movement offense passes. He's also a month from turning 29, and while he was a very good 3p% shooter last year (39.5%), he only shot 70.2% from the line. That's not a 9 million dollar player under last year's cap, which is what 15 million will be in two years. He's majorly overpaid this year, somewhat overpaid next year, and still not a bargain once the cap settles -- and that's assuming he's just as good and efficient as he is now as he ages and plays for an inferior coach and team.

Really bad contract, and I won't say that very often this off-season. Danny Green was a freaking steal in comparison. Just goes to show what a good performance in the playoffs will get you.
