Of these things, I think the first had the largest impact, given that he played 15 games over the two seasons immediately following 06-07. Then 32, then 70 (16 starts), then 17 (0 starts), then out of the league.
Yeah, the suspension and everything, but he just never managed to be healthy. He had problems upstairs too, but if he'd have been healthy, no one would have cared enough; he'd have had the opportunity. But yeah, he just didn't come all the way back as an athlete.
Lol Claiming Gil had a problem with work ethic is like claiming that Trump has a deficit of ego.
This is the guy who did self-imposed two a days his entire career; de-oxygenated his home all year just for Denver games; and asked for a key to the practice facility from two different teams so he could practice at midnight (after his self-imposed two a days). And to top that shot alone in the stadium deep into the night after every loss to practice shots he missed.
This is also the guy who told his coach, "I don't care if I can walk when I'm forty, give me the ball now and I'll just stand there and hit shots," while he was injured and on the sidelines suited up when he obviously couldn't play.
The problem is he tried TOO HARD. Washington had a notoriously bad med staff, so he disregarded their opinion and practiced while injured (running with a parachute etc), until his body broke. Blaming his work ethic is completely correct, but not how you are claiming.

Injuries robbed him of his athleticism early, he never adjusted after relying on it heavily. Game over.
