Defensive Player of the Year Thread (2015-16 Pt. 1)

Post#21 » by ATL Boy » Mon Nov 9, 2015 6:09 pm

Thabo Sefolosha won't win this award, and he won't be a favorite. But he deserves to be mentioned. He takes Atlanta's defense to a whole new level.

Com'on, that's a really lazy and shallow observation at this point.

Wings:

Leonard, Bron

Bigs:

Gobert

You might say his post is.... one dimensional.

maybe Andre Miller? Wolves are 3rd in the NBA in defensive efficiency and Andre Miller getting a DNP-CD every game has to be a contributing factor.

Pistons likely won't have a top record at the end for Drummond to get MVP, but if not DPOY seems very possible.

20 & 20 as the anchor of a top 5 defense has to make him the favorite right now imo.

Has anyone ever won MIP and DPOY in same year before?

I knew Greek Freek was a good defender, but looks like he may deserve to be in this thread too. I didn't realize he was quite this impactful.

Is Giannis still a teenager? Dude is nuts, Bucks are lucky.

Whiteside is a pretty intimidating rim protector. How are his numbers in regards to opp% at the rim?

-7.6% opposing FG% inside of 6 feet. (actual fg% vs usual fg%) Probably not very reliable data at this point though.
David Lee is -21.6%.

LeBron's opponents are shooting 32.6 percent from the floor and he's banged up. It's apparent that he is making defense a priority again.

bstein14 wrote:Andre Drummond took some big steps forward this year... he's not likely to win DPOY yet, but his impact is real. Plus, to a certain degree rebounding is a defensive stat because is prevents the opposing team from getting another chance... Plus, nearly 2 blocks and 2 steals per game and this should be his first season on an all-defensive team.
I agree and I'd been skeptical about Drum. He's not a top "all around" but has become real good at stuff he does well. I back Dray Green and Kawhi L as solid all over. Delli? Too much flop and hack, but he is making the most of his abilities. The shot block 7 ft guys.....have to be considered but I don't see a Mutumbo. The NBA has got more perimeter. That's why Leonard and Green led in DPOY. While a rim defender is a big plus.... it is 2015 and teams do not only do old style drive and dunk.

I DO agree that get rebounds is a factor on D. You could get 3 blocks and not get possession. Get the rebound..that's a stop.
CENSORED... No comment.

1) Rudy Gobert
2) Andre Drummond
3) LeBron James

A season ago, Minnesota had one of the worst defenses in the past decade (second to 05-06 Toronto) allowing teams to shoot 48.7%. This year, that number is at 39.2%. It seems preposterous, but if the Wolves finish near the top of the league in that category, at what point do you seriously give one of the Wolves consideration?

I'm biased but Draymond Green should be top 5 in the discussion.

Bogut has been out for most of the GSW games so far, and Green and Ezeli have been the big man defenders. The stats should back it up. And it they aren't enough, the record should take care of the rest. Green is the returning champ's most important and most versatile defender.

Justise Winslow Already Elite On Defense
NOV 9, 2015 1:42 PM

Justise Winslow has had an immediate impact for the Miami Heat on defense.

Winslow has defended LeBron James, James Harden, Paul George and DeMar DeRozan.

Among players to defend at least 50 field goal attempts this season, Winslow ranks tied for third in the NBA in defensive field goal percentage (32.8%) with San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard (32.8%) and Minnesota's Ricky Rubio (32.8).

In defensive field goal differential, Winslow ranks 12th in the NBA.

“He’s confusing me," said Chris Bosh. "You always want to kind of be easy on the rookies, but he is raising the bar every game with his maturity and ability and knack to play defense. I’ve never seen anything like it as long as I’ve been in this league from a rookie. He’s not making many mistakes. He’s playing solid defense. He’s already built like a tank. Him just being able to move his feet is helping us out a lot.”

Gobert is running away with this. The dude is a stud defensively. Draymond, Kawhi, Lebron, Drummond and Giannis all need mentioning as well. Winslow not yet, but he's definitely in the running to maybe make all 2nd team defensively
