What if GS breaks the 33 game win streak and 72-10 in the same season?

Post#1 » by piston1423 » Wed Nov 25, 2015 3:11 pm

Currently 16-0 with the best start ever in NBA history and now looking at the two marks that a lot of people thought were unbreakable; the 33 game win streak by the Lakers, and the 72-10 record by the Bulls. With the Warriors already breaking Houston's 15-0 start, were would it rank the Warriors all time if they broke the 33 games in a row record and 72-10 record in the same season and then repeat as champs? Greatest team ever?

Yeah. They would be considered the best team ever by some people if they achieve 2 of the 3 things you listed.

Depends on what we are looking at to be considred the greatest team ever. Are we looking at either:

a. Greatest dynasty - if so then this team isn't done yet and need to wait

b. Greatest team in a particular season - if this one then it all comes down to winning the championship. The Warriors could get all three records. Hell they could go 82 - 0 but if they don't top it off with the championship then they'll just be remembered as the greatest team ever to fail in the post season.

If it happens, it will only be because they got lucky with health and everyone else was injured.

Then there would be 6 billion Warriors fans claiming they aren't bandwagoners.

Obviously a breaking the 72 win record and the 33 game win streak along with winning a championship will likely make this the greatest season ever for any team. Combined with the fact that they won last season, we'd have to put this years Warriors in the conversation of greatest team ever. The strength of that last argument will depend on what else happens.

Do they win more than 73 games?
Do they win more than 34 games in a row?
Do they sweep through the playoffs?
Do they benefit from injured opponents?
How many awards are won by the team?
How strong are their playoff opponents?

How those questions play out would determine the strength of their argument for greatest team of all time.

Oh and don't forget plain old analytics. Win margins, defensive and offensive ratings, etc...

I'm starting to think all three things are possible for them. I fully expect them to win the title this year as long as everyone stays healthy. It's such a good time to be a basketball fan and witness this. And who would've thought that the Stephen Curry would be leading this type of run. Amazing.

If they win a ring with it as well they'd be the greatest team of all time. There would be no doubt.

The lakers steam rolled through the playoffs in 2001, setting an NBA best 16-1 post season...could have been 16-0 if it weren't for iverson playing out of his mind in game 1....I think thats what really determines how great a team is...not a single season record....playoffs are a different animal...we saw that last year in the finals....lets see the warriors go 16-0 in the playoffs; follow it up with a championship...then we'll discuss if they are one of the greatest teams ever assembled...until then, enjoy stephen curry's dominance.

now if the the warriors can go on a 34 game winning streak, go 73-9 in the regular season, and go 16-0 in the playoffs, and follow it all up with a championship, while curry wins MVP for the 2nd time in a row....then they are clear cut, hands down, the best team ever assembled...theres no tie...they are simply the best ever.

Probably.. but in Pro Sports where you REALLY get credit is if you have a "dynasty run". GSW is a lock to do very well in the playoffs... but...to win the West? win another Title? That's never a given. Looking back in 5 years? GSW CAN have a grand run. They also might find their Waterloo. Right now.....GSW is sittin' on top of the World. Nobody has the formula to beat them, but....in Basketball....there's an element of chance. The game has variables. It's all but impossible to just run the table.

can GSW be perfect at the end of December? Yes. They STILL have months beyond that where they have their most difficult matchups. Can they go 72-10? Yes. Will they? Probably not. The season is a grind..a marathon. I doubt ANY team is playing at or near the max all the way.
CENSORED... No comment.

I think a good question is who would have predicted 2 years ago this team would have a chance to be considered the greatest team ever. I remember watching the RUN TMC Warriors, the Sprewell/Webber/Carlesimo Warriors, Gilbert Arenas and then having some down years and now they just might eclipse some of the greatest teams ever. Amazing how far they have turned it around....and to think Mark Jackson started it all......
I'm so tired of the typical......
