Kyrie Irving is another good candidate for this in terms of players that aren't bad/underwhelming

Copeland was already 28 when he came into the NBA 3 years ago. He worked his way up from small European leagues, to earning a summer league roster spot with the Knicks to actually making the team and cracking the rotation. He actually developed tremendously since going undrafted in 2006 and had a crazy journey to make it to the NBA.

I agree with Irving, this dude was so polished when he entered the NBA that everything he needs to works on is on mental side of the game.

I would argue he's developed quite a bit since coming to Indiana.

He's accepted a bench role, and been a very positive locker room guy, and he developed a very respectable 3 point shot that he never had in Detroit. (His best with the pistons was 31.7% on 1.9 attempts, while he shot a pretty good 39.0% on 2.9 attempts in 71 games for Indy last season). I didn't follow him much in Detroit, but if he was in fact a cancer that he was rumoured to be there then he's done a complete 180 in developing as a leader, since he's been in Indy he's never complained about his role, or touches, works extremely hard and sets a great example for the younger guys. He's been nothing like what he was alleged to be when he was a Piston.

Shaq's career was based on using his enormous body to force the opposing player out of his way to score, rebound, or defend.

DJ at least has developed as a rebounder.

Picks like MJ and Duncan are dumb. Even though they started so good but clearly got much better.

I mean if you're gonna go blindly on numbers you could say Blake but he's gotten a lot better.

Id agree with Irving as he hasn't improved a great deal though last year I think he did.

Not sure what you mean by mental side of his game. If you mean get smarter then yes agreed. Also learn to try on d.

Stuckey was a cancer in Detroit? He began improving on his 3pt% with the pistons, I've paid close attention to him since he left and seems to be the exact same player. I'm not hating on Hot Rod, I just think he's pretty much the exact same player he came into the league as.

Dwight Howard hasn't acquired or refined any skills since entering the league.

BoomFizzle wrote:Since we have discussed players who have changed their games and improved the most - I figured it would be interesting to see the flip side to that. Lots of rookies show potential but have holes in their game that we think they will fix - unsurprisingly that isn't always the case.

My Picks:

DeAndre Jordan - (Yes, I am a DJ hater so this isn't entirely objective)
He is more or less the same player he was to start. Yes, he has improved his defensive positioning. Yes, he has improve his rebounding.
However, beyond that he is the same player. He still has no offence and can't shoot free throws. Strangely his per 36 numbers were almost identical for the first 4 years of his career, then improved from there. It just feels like if he had improved his FT shooting, it could have really opened up a much larger offensive role for him. He is a player who I assumed would have improved a lot over the years.

Clearly DJ is superior to Biyombo, but is he really worth ~17m more per year?

Tyreke Evans
This may also be a little harsh. He had a great rookie campaign which inflated expectations for him.
Still, if you look through is per minute stats, his production has barely changed. He is still the same player - with the same strengths and weaknesses. If he could add a consistent 3pt shot it would really open up his game.

This is a really a good point, almost as good as saying Jordan was a chump who just happened to be born really good at dunking

Joe Smith, Shareef Abdur Rahim, Glenn Robinson
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.
