Exactly, and you can easily spot the people who just repeat what they've heard. There have been many meetings and marches in cities from Los Angeles to Chicago to philly to New York. Of course it doesn't fit the narrative so folks either ignore it or lie about it.

I'm cool with athletes doing this kind of thing as long as they also don't spew political nonsense.

Athletes using their platform to call for injustice to be recognized and addressed is great. It's not great when they also spew misinformed talking points. Nothing like that from Carmelo here, so kudos to him for being far more intelligent than the mouth-breathing rubes that will soon come out of the woodwork with hot takes on "military style assault weapons of war" and "high capacity clips"

JulesWinnfield wrote:And what's he demanding change on? What law does he want passed or changed? What policies to be enacted? It makes for a nice post, it allows him to appear conscientious, but it's hollow as hell unless he's willing to put teeth into it

This is exactly what he should NOT do unless in his spare time he happens to have become an expert on the relevant subject matter who would be well suited to making specific policy proposals. When celebrities who don't have a clue try this they end up regurgitating mindless talking points and nonsense, cancelling out any positive effect from simply using their celebrity to help shed light on something and help spur others to recognize problems. A wise man understands his limits.

This and just more of this. Im all for people with followings trying to get issues and other injustices recognized. But I also find it very cringeworthy when a lot of them (not all of them) give their opinions on these hot issue topics that are just wrong. Lets be honest a lot of these people in the entertainment business are not well educated and are pretty disconnected from the real world. There has been plenty of times where a famous entertainer will hear a hot take on a hot button issue and take it as fact and portray as fact on their twitter or something. And guess what they do have a lot of younger people who are more gullible and take what these famous people say to heart. That is when I have issues of famous people in entertainment talking out on these issues when they are clearly not that educated in the issues.

On a quick side note, this has nothing to do with what Melo said. Just a generalization of famous people in entertainment

Yeah, and the mouth breathing rubes that will come out with "ya ain't takin my guns!" and "But the constitution says!!".

Yeah, screw that constitution and rule of law crap...let's just make it up as we go along.

The constitution has either permitted the government we have, or been powerless to stop it. Either way I'm not impressed with the piece of paper.

The system screws all races? How does it do that?

You think only black people get screwed by the system? If so you aren't paying attention.

Here in Atlanta several young people were arrested for trying to block our already congested interstates. This was after Mayor Reed warned that blocking of the interstates would not be allowed. I work with young people in the inner city of Atlanta so here is my perspective : Speaking out is nice but will not accomplish a damn thing if we don't do things in our own communities as well. Be as passionate about voting (especially local elections). Sadly many of the protestors will not vote to decide who represents them as a whole but will bi..h about wanting change. Better yourself individually so your voice matters more!! Oragnize real dialogue with local officials to help foster change hopefully.Do those things instead of just disturbing the damn peace!

Not sure what he's expecting but if a ton of kids being killed while at school doesn't make even the slightest dent for change, then nothing will (no matter the issue)..

Yeah! Let me know how you feel when you have to quarter a bunch of soldiers if god forbid a war starts in the US.

Thank god we have amendments and things that made complete sense in the 1700s and need to be amended to modern society can be.

How about protest the recent murder of 3 people outside a liquor store in San Bernadino where a 9yr old kid was executed.

This is a bs Cop out excuse. Every race is more likely to be hurt and killed by their own race not just blacks. If one doesn't have the mental capacity to see the difference between crooks committing crimes and murder and a civil servant who took an oath to protect and serve basically committing murder then there's no hope. Also I'm so sick and tired of people lying like blacks don't protest black on black crime. It happens every day.

People like you are the problem. Every race may be more likely to be hurt or killed by their own race but it happens at an astronomically higher rate in the black community. Also Black Lives Matter isn't going out of its way to protest any of these black on black crimes so don't that bull that protests happen every day because they don't. You just want to go out of your way to make excuses so that the spotlight isn't put on these black communities that seem to have zero respect for black lives and turn the spotlight on these so called bad cops that are a tiny tiny minority compared to the vast majority of cops. Then of course you also have the black lives matter movement going out of their way to defend criminals like Michael Brown who attacked a cop and was 100% guilty yet they tried to defend him. It is disgusting how little discretion this movement uses and it is turning this country into Mexico where it is open season on cops. Just shameful.

On one hand I'd encourage absolutely anyone to formulate an opinion on political issues, but on the other hand, like others have said, athletes have no special insight into political issues. Melo has no inherently better understanding of the recent BLM-police issue than I, but there aren't thousands of impressionable young people inclined to believe me because I'm a sports star.

They aren't gonna do ish. As long as those athletes are getting their millions deposited they will continue to stay silent and remain politically and racially neutral.

Most athletes voice their opinions after being moderated and edited by their sponsor's.

So what exactly did I lie about? Show me the evidence that there was a Black Lives Matter protest for the 3 people that were assassinated in San Bernadino. Maybe I missed that protest.

Some white people do get screwed by the system, but it is not because they're white. Therein lies the difference. The system is both classist and racist. Unfortunately, many seem to align themselves on one side or the other rather than seeing both as interrelated problems that need to be figured out concordantly.

Truth.

Most athletes/entertainers have the wealth and recognition to effectuate change. But how many are actually willing to put their money into action ? None. Why ? Because the entertainment industry can effectively destroy them and their brand faster than it was built.. Look at what happened to Tupac and Michael Jackson.. At least those two managed to die with some dignity.. Bill Cosby and OJ won't have that same privilege..

If the evidence is accurate, Cosby is a rapist and OJ murdered two human beings. Their dignity really shouldn't be of the slightest concern.

Carmelo and many other atheletes have been doing charitable/community/social outreach work for years. Athletes are in a unique position to mobilize people because they are very often viewed as heroes in their communities. People look up to athletes, and if an athlete cares about trying to affect social change a great many people will listen.

Carmelo is trying to start the conversation. He's not saying that he has answers but what he is saying is that professional athletes can and should do more to help the communities that they came from.

PS on what planet did Michael Jackson die with dignity? Certainly not on this one.
All in all he's just another prick with no wall
