Most athletes voice their opinions after being moderated and edited by their sponsor's.
Truth.
Most athletes/entertainers have the wealth and recognition to effectuate change. But how many are actually willing to put their money into action ? None. Why ? Because the entertainment industry can effectively destroy them and their brand faster than it was built.. Look at what happened to Tupac and Michael Jackson.. At least those two managed to die with some dignity.. Bill Cosby and OJ won't have that same privilege..
Carmelo and many other atheletes have been doing charitable/community/social outreach work for years. Athletes are in a unique position to mobilize people because they are very often viewed as heroes in their communities. People look up to athletes, and if an athlete cares about trying to affect social change a great many people will listen.
Carmelo is trying to start the conversation. He's not saying that he has answers but what he is saying is that professional athletes can and should do more to help the communities that they came from.
PS on what planet did Michael Jackson die with dignity? Certainly not on this one.
