Why are you a fan of your team?

Post#1 » by bleu » Fri Jul 15, 2016 7:52 pm

With the off season lingering, and not a ton to talk about as far as NBA news goes right now, I thought I'd post a discussion about why you support the team that you do just for fun. I feel like most people will fall into one of two categories, but I'm interested to see how people vote.

I personally have been a Jazz fan since the day I was born. Before I could walk I was wearing Jazz shirts and jerseys, and I grew up playing Jr. Jazz basketball at the local rec center, watching games on TV and in person with my dad and uncles, and cheering only for the Jazz. So for me, I'd say that it mostly has to do with tradition that I'm a Jazz fan.

Not from the US, so neither geological nor traditional connections. I started watching the NBA again around 2011 and really liked the dynamic backcourt of GSW (Curry and Monta, yes I know the fit was atrocious), also an underdog team to root for...welp!

Grew up in Monterey. It was either go for the team that was just over an hour away and where you can go to their games a few times a year or go for the Lakers. It was always pretty obvious who were actual NBA fans growing up, they liked the Warriors and people who didn't really watch basketball would claim to be Lakers fans because of Kobe or Shaq. So Ya because of geography

I live in Cleveland (or rather, a suburb in the greater Cleveland area). It's always interesting to think about what my fandom would be if I lived in, say, North Dakota or something. I could see myself being a Jazz fan for some reason.

You could call it geography, but my first memory of a basketball game was reggie miller's famous 8 points in 9 seconds to steal a playoff victory against the knicks. It was on at my grandmother's house. The neighbor next door, my best childhood friend came out the house yelling "we won!".

When I really got into basketball, me and a parent would go to a game every year at Market Square Arena. The teams I played on growing up, even the high school team, went to games together there.

So while I don't particularly feel any affection for Indiana itself, those memories shaped my love for the game.

My secondary team I root for is the Spurs, and I got into them when they drafted George Hill, the first player from IUPUI to go pro. Still have his Spurs jersey in my closet.

originally from connecticut, but grew up in long beach, ca. when i was young, my cousin had to baby sit me everyday after school because both my parents were working long-hour jobs. her brother and her are huge lakers' fans. i remember growing up and just watching the games with them and fortunately, they even took me to a few games as well. i was an eddie jones fan originally, hated kobe. then later grew to love him.

From Honolulu so no geographical connection. My dad is born and raised San Diego and raised me to despise LA sports and the big market/outspend the competition mentality. I started watching the NBA in 2003 right when I started playing and the Spurs were just such an amazing contrast to the hated Lakers to me.

Born in a city literally halfway between Sac and Oakland. My dad took me to my first Kings game when I was 6 months old.

Manu Ginobili. First NBA game I ever saw was 2005 Spurs v Nuggets Round 1 Game 3. Didn't know **** about NBA or basketball, but I knew I had to keep watching that man.
