I wouldn't want him on my team though, definitely not in a city that has a lot of distractions. He's perfect in Cleveland.

Again, it's not a discount unless a team is winning to pay you more, and, if the only teams that are willing to pay you more are sure-fire lottery teams, then you've got decide which market you want to play in.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

Hope Shump improves this offseason and becomes the 3+D guy most Cavs fans expected from him this year.

Shump didn't do anything particularly well offensively this season, and he lost focus on D quite a bit as well, but the team ended up +1.3 with him on the floor .vs. +0.8 with JR on the floor ... and Shump was primarily coming off the bench. Shump had a slight edge on JR last year as well (when Shump did start some of the time).

Having both gives Lue the option to go one way or another depending which guy is playing better ... that's valuable ... but pretty expensive at $10M + $15M.

Top 10 is a big stretch.

PER puts him 33rd, which I think is also wrong. If we asked everyone to rank the 10 SG they would like to have on their team, I don't think anyone seriously puts JR in there.

Harden, Butler, Thompson, Wade, DeRozan, McCollum, Reddick, Wiggins/Lavine, Beal, Oladipo. You have 10 there.

And then Tyreke, T. Allen, Lou Williams, Ginobli (probably still more useful last year), Middleton, Batum/Lamb, Fournier, Burks, Monta, E. Turner, Jamal, Kilpatrick, RHJ, Hood...

Plenty of candidates as good if not better.

I mean, while JR is not as good as some of the guys on that list, he fits his role with the Cavs perfectly. He's a spot-up shooter who can create his own shot when necessary, but doesn't need a lot of touches to be effective. When he's hot, you can keep hitting him and watch him rain threes. When he's cold, he's still enough of a threat that the opposing team can't just leave him open. He's basically the ideal complement to a Kyrie/LeBron offense. He provides floor spacing, solid defense, and is a capable passer. He doesn't demand touches and is more than willing to play his role. That hasn't always been the case with JR, but that's the case for Cavs JR.

If Cleveland is in the luxury next year JR Smith costs his salary plus 2x for penalty. 45 mil is a heavy bill for a guy not in the top 10 for his position.

It isn't JR for $45 million, it's Lebron James for $65 million... Seems reasonable.

Dan Gilbert has a net worth >$5 billion. He can afford it. If someone like Lacob owned the Cavs, I'd be more concerned about their ability to spend.

if it its a 1/15 or a 2/30 this makes sense, just not any longer than that.

If he comes in on a one year deal then he becomes a trade piece and they can get another good player (maybe Rudy Gay, or even work out a deal to bring in Greg Monroe later on in the season from Milwaukee).
