JR gave up money before, they won a title, he's a good fit... GM LeBron has justified having this type of responsibility.

What money did he "give up"? He stupidly opted out of a contract that no team had any interest in exceeding last summer. This summer he opted out of his contract, again with the hope of getting more money, and again no team appears ready to pay him what he wants. Agreeing to play for your actual market value isn't giving up money.

None, I should of said was (arguably) underpaid.

We'll keep your boy on the roster, we'll even pay him very good money. But we aren't going to pay him $15 million a year, and neither is anybody else. Now if you seriously want to redestroy your image over J.R. freaking Smith, and get accused of running away from Golden States' superteam, there is nothing we can do about that. After the long climb back, culminating in statues and streets being names after you, I would hope it would never come to that again. It would be such a senseless waste. But either way, while we'll offer him something fair, for the sake of some sort of payroll sanity, which I would think you would actually support as it might give us more flexibility to stay competitive, we aren't going to be paying J.R. twice his market value.
See you in camp.
Have a great summer!

In my opinion, LeBron lost any leverage he had when he admitted to the media that he was going to resign with the Cavs. I can't see the Cavs paying JR this much.

Yes. I'm hazy on the exact figures cuz I don't know their precise situation, but kuruptedcavs said they aren't in the repeat offender status yet. So if that's the case, the difference (assuming Lebron comes back around 30 mil) in lux tax between let's say no JR Smith and JR @ 15 mil a year, would be over 30 mil in lux tax. Plus JR's 15 mil salary obviously. Even if it's only a 10 mil salary, it's about 19 mil difference in lux tax payment vs letting him walk.

JR will see a nice payday but the Cavs are bidding against themselves, no other team has stepped up, and JR had already worn out his welcome in numerous cities.

Dead on IMO.
From LeBron's perspective, it's just Dan's money going to JR. If you're LeBron, after the way Dan reacted when he left, you want to take every opportunity to rob him of his money. It doesn't hurt the Cavs - just Dan.

Dan Gilberts Casino has taken me for at least 20% of JRs contract worth so I know he has the money. Either way, JR has played like a top 10 SG the past 2 years. IF Mike Conley is getting paid more money than Tom Brady and Cam Newton combined, I see no reason JR isnt at least a 15 mill a year player.

I'm not sure about this, LeBron clearly wants JR on the team for some unknown reason.
He wants him on the team because for about 35-40% of games this season, JR plays like the 3rd best player on a championship team. Just because JR was a liability years ago doesnt mean he is now. He has been a incredible asset since joining the Cavs with a changed demeanor, lockdown defense and amazing 3pt shooting ability.

Re: J.R. Smith seeking 15 million a year....
I think JR / Lebron / Klutch have played this hand very poorly. Lebron has zero leverage, he's not leaving after winning the title and there's nowhere to go, short of "retiring" for a year. Instead of getting JR paid when the monopoly money was flying around, they told everyone he wanted to come back to Cleveland and didn't negotiate. Now they think Cleveland should pay a market level deal? When no one else is offering that? Good luck.

JR has proven his worth and shouldn't be punished for any past mistakes. Given the amount of money being handed out to lesser players, JR Smith should get his money.
Also the Cavs should stop acting like they are doing HIM a favor because If Wade can leave Miami (rightfully or not) for being slighted, JR can move along as well.
$15million is right for a top 10 SG, on a Championship team. Miami would be a nice destination, imo.

Easy to say "hey, give him his 15 mil, no big deal", but giving him 15 instead 10 for example is going to put that extra money in a higher tier, and a repeater bonus. For the Cavs, that's gonna be a difference of about 20 mil in lux tax payments, cuz that third tier is 3.5 bucks, and the 4th tier is 4 and a quarter and barring a paycut for Lebron, giving JR his raise puts them in that 4th tier.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but when I look at the #s, giving JR Smith 15 mil vs letting him walk would be a difference of over 60 million dollars in luxury tax + his salary.
The Luxury tax is progressive. The tax goes up at incremental levels ($5 mil). As it stands, the look to be at about $130 million, $17 over the cap. The Cavs aren't repeaters for 2026/17. That would be a tax penalty of about $35 million.
The thing to remember is that is not JR Smith that takes the Cavs into the luxury tax. It is Lebron James who will sign after Smith.
Is Lebron James worth $65 million per year?

i don't understand, they paid luxury taxes last year, wouldn't that make them repeat offenders this season?
The repeater tax kicks in if you have paid luxury tax in 4 of 5 seasons. Cavs just finished year #2.

To be fair that seemed like a wink-wink deal.
Manu takes the room exception at 2.7M last year so they can sign Aldridge and then next year when the cap goes up they give him 14M.
It was a 2 year 17M deal. Jerry Colangelo relationship with Pops just allowed him to utilize the Sixers and his son to have "fake" interest in Manu so the story checks out and alarm bells don't go crazy. The Spurs "had to" match.

Not my money, so I really don't care how much he makes. Not like we can use the extra cash to sign anyone else anyways.

Yeah, I'd try to bring him down to 13'ish a year, but ultimately they better pay that man before letting him walk. We need him.
