Jamal Mashburn or Eddie Jones better for early 2000's Hornets

Post#1 » by mo2thewillyo » Tue Sep 13, 2016 5:06 am

For the early 2000's charlotte hornets... did you think Mashburn or Eddie Jones was better for them? Neither Mashburn or Jones were good for the early 2000's heat.

My favorite version of the early 2000's Hornets team was 200l.

Eddie Jones in 1999-00 season was really, really good. He did a lot more than Mashburn, who was mostly just a scorer (Mashburn was like a poor man's Carmelo). 2000 EJ averaged 20/5/4 while also leading the league in steals by a pretty significant margin. Scored efficiently, good shooter, too. Plus/minus stats absolutely love him, in fact he's one of the top impact guys in the league that year based on RAPM. His skillset would be a great fit in today's game (like a better version of Khris Middleton). Very good two-way player.

OT I feel bad for Eddie Jones. He was a solid player on the Lakers then they traded him and the Lakers won a title. Then he was on the Heat. Shaq showed up. He didn't like Eddie, they traded him and won a title.

Jones missed out on championships twice.

I would take Jones over Mashburn but could be convinced to take Mash for better team fit.

Eddie Jones was the better player for sure, for the reasons already mentioned. He was a much better defender, and very good off ball player as well. The thing is when the Hornets did that trade with Miami they also got P.J Brown out of it as well who was a good PF at that time. Mashburn's production also seemed to decline out in the playoffs from what I remember of him. He also came up short in those playoff series vs the Knicks from what I remember when he was in Miami

I´d pick Jones most probably to answer OP´s question but in general, the Hornets had a very solid team... and their headband-unit against the Heat was epic

I'm curious, does that include the '05 Heat?

I never went back to look at the stats, but as a Pistons fan who was most worried about the Shaq/Wade Heat at that time, Eddie Jones was like a nightmare, and obviously that wasn't his prime. He'd just keep playing so solidly and not give us a break. I remember thinking it was rather unfair the Heat could have a guy like that as a roleplayer. Honestly I probably would have preferred him over the Pistons all-star SG Rip Hamilton.
Then, in '06, they traded him for little. I think I was hearing Shaq didn't like him, or maybe thought he was a choker afraid of the big moment (not that this makes sense IMO, he was a 3rd option at max). As a fan of their major EC competition, I was relieved and thought the Heat were crazy. It turned out not to matter but, from a bball perspective without hindsight, I still find that a crazy move.

I don't know Mashburn and didn't watch Jones in their primes, but it's not surprising to see the stat analysis posted by Quotatious. EJ is a guy who could fit on many, many teams. I'd always want him. I think the only question about him is his capability as a #1 option, but that's not such a bad thing.

Healthy Mash was a BEAST. Unfortunately, healthy Mash was a rarity.

Eddie Jones for sure. Always wished my Lakers kept him and Nick Van Exel.
