Idea to spice up NBA All-Star weekend

Post#1 » by King4Day » Thu Dec 1, 2016 3:45 pm

Since we've seen just about everything there is with the dunk contest and the 3pt shootout, what if the NBA had a competition for an 'everyday person' to join the contest with the NBA stars?
They could be streetballers, globetrotters, or just people who are super athletic and can do tricks with a basketball.

At the least, it would garner ratings and engage the fans more by letting them be a part of it.
You'd just add one person per competition. Chances are they won't win many of these but it would be fun to watch an everyday person, with skills, take part in it.

What does everyone think?

Willing to bet non NBA players would win the dunk contest most of the time (maybe not by a landslide now that Lavine and Gordon made the dunk contest great again)

They should make it outdoors and allow pets.

They should open the dunk contest to players who aren't in the NBA. Throughout history there have been some amazing dunks being performed by non-NBA players. Remember that 720 dunk, for example? Maybe have a dunkathon of NBA players vs rest of the world?

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

How about actually playing hard during the game and showing competitiveness instead of the showboating with lobs & jams.. Last year's east vs west was a joke. The only thing watchable was the dunk contest.

I'd like to see an all star cheerleader, jungle ball bikini game.

Let the fans vote for the 20 hottest cheerleaders from around the league, then put them in bikinis and have a game with no refs and no rules, and let them go at it. Winning team gets 2 million dollars, for motivation.

Surprise everyone and tell the players that the event is a singing and dancing contest.

They should do a dunk contest. Also a 3 point contest where maybe 6-8 players each shoot 5 balls from 5 spots. Maybe one ball from each spot can be worth 2 points, the rest 1 point. This would settle the best shooter argument. I kind of like the idea of a skills competition too. Maybe some guards compete against each other in working their way through a course where they have to pass, shoot, dribble, etc.

Please no, that was a terrible knee-jerk idea by Selig and thankfully MLB has abondoned it in the latest CBA.

Why is it a bad idea?

How about a combination of other people's ideas:

Make it a friendly hazing thing. All rookies must compete in a one-on-one tournament.
Bonus that the players union would never go for: for every year that a rookie refuses to enter the tournament or are unable to enter due to injury, a year of team option gets tacked onto the end of the rookie contract.

Because if fans get to vote and the players they vote get to decide something significant, there is going to be undeserved advantage for someone almost every year.

Because MLB tried to have it both ways. Putting meaning on the game but still treating it like an exhibition, having silly things like fan voting and every team has to have a player there, even garbage ass tank teams.
