If Horry didn't have that swagger Pop would have 1 less championship. Bob was the difference maker v the Pistons in 05.

I like Horrys stories. He is a common tie that can compare the Hakeem Rockets, Shaq/Kobe Lakers and Duncan/Manu/Parker Spurs. He can compare Rudy T, Phil and Pop. Please continue sharing. I ain't mad at u. Nothing but love for u. Even if I don't agree w u. Keep telling stories.

pop is the same as belichick. they have a goal/job, and that's for the team to win. if you have players that are doing stuff counter to that then what's the point?

in the nfl teams have hundreds of players on their big boards for the draft, the patriots have about 50 on theirs because belichick is at the point in his career where he has zero patience for players that don't fully buy in. the spurs are very similar to that as well.

in terms of stars "dumbing down their games", it's a good example of pop doing what's best for THE TEAM; it's not about the star player getting his. if it was in the team's best interest for that star player to do a lot, they would (see: kawhi). belichick is the same way, as he often puts the ball in brady's hands because he's the most reliable but when it calls for it he'll run the ball forty times in a game.

Horry is right. Pop is a great, but his robotic style of coaching has never bee good at adapting to situations. Probably why he hated Kobe who is the GOAT adapter and would ruin his gameplans
"I don't think I would lose," Jordan said in the video, before smiling and adding, "Other than to Kobe Bryant.."

horry is a fool.. he basically said "you have to know your role and play team ball to win in SA" (with his abcd anaology)

Very well said.

Pop also developed George Hill who was picked in the bottom of the draft. Turned out to be a lottery-pick-level talent.

Then you have, Patty Mills, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Tiago Splitter, Aron Baynes, Stephen Jackson, Gary Neal, Bruce Bowen, etc.... all are/were consistently productive rotation players or better.

Horry is an absolute tool. How the hell do you dumb his game down anyway lmao, he was a genius at struggling to get near 10 points per game I'll say that much.

I think you guys are assuming that Horry was talking about himself with that quote, doesn't seem like he was, but then again, talking about McDyess and Finley as stars at the stage they were when they go to the Spurs doesn't compute. The only one is LMA, and sure there could be a slight argument for RJ being a borderline All-Star too, but the others don't make sense.

What I'm wondering is what RJ said about it too.

Exactly.

Only Aldridge was in a position to really play a major role as a "star" player would on another team, and from about late December '15 and forward in 15-16, Aldridge played quite well. Fell off after Game 3 of the playoffs in the OKC series, though, as defense tightened up from OKC. 2017 Kawhi would of made a difference in that series, along with 2017 Simmons (who barely played in the series, along with Diaw). Role-players either didn't play or didn't show up.

Jefferson never was going play like he did in the past because of Manu/Parker/Duncan already being there. For what Jefferson was expected to do, someone more designated and a bit more athletic would of been better (Ariza, for example). What they needed was a Bowen replacement... both of them just came 5 years later and RJ fit the bill offensively, but not defensively.. he had his nights, but was questionable.

Kawhi getting better over the offseason and into last season, forced Aldridge to get less touches. I don't think anyone expected Kawhi to be as good as he became, and still will get better, most likely.

Without diving into the posts, is Horry blaming Pop for letting Derek Fisher make a circus shot with no time on the clock? This is his example of bad coaching? That shot goes in about 5% of the time at best.
I don't want to say we're dysfunctional. But we need to be more functional.

Yea, I'm not even sure he's remembering that play the way it actually happened.

Nothing wrong with "dumbing down" your game if its the betterment of the team.

Its not one on one basketball, but 5 on 5... team.

What the Spurs have is repeatable and is systematic enough that as long as you can execute you have a role. Other teams rely on 1 or 2 stars to do everything and the role players just stand around hoping maybe they get the rebound or get an open lane if the defense doubles on the star player.. the Spurs beat you 5 on 5. Less burden on stars but more usage on everyone else.

Of course lately.. this has been toned down as Kawhi Leonard has been used more and more... but thats because Spurs are in transition and are missing the key role players they need. One... a healthy Parker... or a replacement.

Popovic has the Spurs highest winning percentage because of his way... and rings to show. So leave it at that.

that's just not true at all. he coached them through the robinson->duncan transition, then duncan->parker transition, and now he's adapted to having a star in kawhi. what you've said isn't rooted in facts whatsoever, you've literally made that up. :noway:

Melo's resume is not that far off from Dominque Wilkins. Hell, Mitch Richmond is in the HOF, but somehow Melo shouldn't.

Nope.

Melo is the king of empty stats guys. He is a great scorer, but terrible at most every other aspect of basketball. There is a reason his teams don't win.

The WFC Nuggets team was because of Chauncy Billups, a proven leader and winner.

All the people here agreeing with Horry obviously do not understand that nearly every winning team that doesn't have LeBron on their roster hasincorporated some of Pop's plays or style of basketball in their playbook. Kerr's Warriors play Pop's basketball at times but they also have a better personnel than Pop at the moment. Mike Budenholzzer who was Pop's assistant for 10+ years has won a COY award playing with ok players that have many flaws like Al Horford and Jeff Teague. If what Horry means by dumping down their game is that they need to stop ISO chucking and that Pop's system can't have ball stoppers like Melo or LMA (LMA is an ok player in my opinion but the style of basketball he plays doesn't fit what today's NBA is all about especially since he is an average defender at best) then i'm ok with that.

And the list of established stars are: an overrated aldridge that sucks in his natural position in the current NBA, an old finley that isn't in his prime, a very old mcdeyss, and a good but overrated player like jefferson. just LOL

No one of these were stars when they were in the spurs. Popovich isn't stupid like horry seems to be, he will not let elite role players play like stars.

Manu Ginobili seemed to free lance and be creative. I don't know that Pop has no tolerance for creativity.

When Pop yelled at Duncan, Duncan was OK with being yelled at. Players were not going to object to being yelled at if Duncan was being yelled at. Now Leonard has to play that role or Pop needs to stop yelling.

Don Nelson alienated a talented Warriors team by yelling at them. Ellie and Askew left Nellie and Webber revolted. Yelling might be a mistake.

If you don't like Pop's way of doing things, then leave. The show will go on without you. All they've done is be the most successful franchise in sports over the past 20 years with several different sets of personnel.

Oh, and hindsight is pretty fun. If Kobe catches the ball going away from the hoop and hits the shot, Horry is telling us 13 years later that you don't let Kobe beat you, make Fisher or somebody else hit a tough shot.

Pop is one of the few coaches that can identify a players' strengths and then integrate those strengths into his ever-adapting system. Spurs ball style has always changed according to the personnel at Pop's disposal. He has done a fantastic job putting his players in positions to succeed such that their success is causing team success.

With all the players that has passed through the Spurs locker room since Pop took the reigns will naturally result in some players being underutilized or incorrectly utilized to their strengths, but the level of success achieved has put Pop in a position to be given the benefit of the doubt against criticism in that regard.

Imagine ginobili on another team. He would go over 9000 on everybody.

What a bunch of crap. Guarding kobe on last play is always the right choice. And not because you dont like him but because, as history has taught us, thats smart.
Some Stars dont have to dumb down. They are dumb because they lack the knowledge of team ball.
And for me personally yelling at players is part of the coaching. Any player who feels threatened by it is a special snowflake made out of sugar. In europe yelling is the norm.

I liked horry but this just shows that he is the dumb one. And salty(for no apparent reason). And a snake.
