Your favorite era by position

Post#1 » by PKABOOICU » Tue Jul 25, 2017 11:01 am

Which era of domination via position is the best and why?
I know some of these eras overlap a little bit, but are still well demarcated by the dominance by position.

Era of the Point Guards
-Chris Paul
-John Wall
-Russell Westbrook
-Stephen Curry
(damian lillard, kyrie irving, derrick rose, kemba walker, isiah thomas)

Era of the Shooting Guards
-Kobe Bryant
-Tracy McGrady
-Allen Iverson
-Ray Allen
(reggie miller, richard hamilton, latrell sprewell, eddie jones, allan houston, jr rider, manu ginobili, jerry stackhouse)

Era of the Small Forwards
-Lebron James
-Carmelo Anthony
-Kawhi Leonard
-Kevin Durant
(draymond green, paul george, giannis antetokoumpo, paul pierce, vince carter)

Era of the Power Forwards
-Tim Duncan
-Kevin Garnett
-Dirk Nowitzki
-Pau Gasol
(chris webber, antonio mcdyess, jermaine o'neal, rasheed wallace, amare stoudemire)

Era of the Centers
-Hakeem Olajuwon
-Patrick Ewing
-David Robinson
-Shaquille O'Neal
(dikembe mutombo, Alonzo Mourning, rik smits, vlade divac)

EDIT: I personally prefer the SG dominant era from 99-05. The Kobe/Tmac/Iverson/Allen/VC matchups were intense. Then you sprinkle in some Eddie Jones, JR Rider, and Latrell Sprewell. That era was absolutely electrifying. MJ had just retired, and that top SG spot was up for grabs. Wade had just entered the scene too, although he only caught the tail end of some of those elite battles. Kobe was a carbon copy of MJ.
Tmac in 2001 had one of the most dominant seasons in NBA history, VC played SF but often went up against SGs. The VC/AI matchups were east coast prime time television. You had 2 of the greatest shooters in NBA history in Ray Allen and Reggie Miller. Manu Ginobili was severely underrated. Jerry Stackkhouse came into his own in detroit and tore up the league. Jersey Sales and popularity were through the roof.

I would probably take late 80s early 90s PGs over todays.

-Magic
-Isiah
-Stockton
-Tim Hardaway
-Kevin Johnson

Mark Price, Terry Porter, Bogues, Harper

It might not have the depth but having Magic/Isiah at the top as best players on multiple championship teams kind of makes up for it. Stockton at his best and all-time leader in assist and steals just caps it off. Tim Hardaway and Kevin Johnson were extremely good and Price, Porter, Bogues, and Harper round out a great era.

For centers, the "era of domination" by position would have to be the era of Bill Russell, Wilt, Kareem (Reed, Cowens, Unseld, etc.), as those center-led teams dominated the championships and MVP awards. You could argue that the era lasted at least from the rise of Russell and the Celtics in the late 50s through the 1977 Walton/Blazers title, and gradually transitioned in the late 70s and early 80s, as Unseld won a title in '78 on an ensemble Bullets team and Kareem continued winning titles on the Magic-led Lakers, but Moses Malone was the best player on the 1983 Sixers title team.

An era with such awful ISO ball sure had some badass guards. Don't forget Rip Hamilton.

Era of SF's would definitely be the 80's for me.

Bird, Erving, Wilkins, Dantley, King, English, Wilkes, Worthy, Mullin, Pippen, D.Thompson are all in the HOF. And this doesn't include allstars like Vanderweghe, Cummings, Natt, Marques Johnson, Mitchell, Drew, Wedman, EJ, Xavier,, Aguirre, Nance.

Some really good ones at the top of the current era but not even close to the same depth.

While the era gets a rep for ISO play I have a big respect for the 2000s shooting guards. While the idea was these guards were emulating MJ those guys ran the gamut of the full NBA experience in terms of running all types of plays. Those guys shot 3's, posted up, ran the PnR, ISO'd, drove by dudes, and spotted up. While not the most efficient or aesthetically pleasing play it was a time where you could easily see who were the best and the versatility of what these guys did left you thinking they were better players than they were at least for their time.

Dwyane Wade deserves more then just a little mention at the bottom there. Him and Iverson and Kobe had some epic games. He played against almost all of those guys and he burst onto the scene quickly even though it was later. I mean other than Kobe he was the best player on that whole SG list, and his peak was very arguably even better than Kobes, quite the omission honestly.

The late 50's till somewhere in the 70's is hands down the best era for centers. The game was crazy center dominated at that time. Today is dominated by the point guards.

I think all the other spots there's some interesting debates. That said I'll take the 00's for 4's are a pretty strong step up. I know the 90's with Chuck and Malone have their case, but Duncan, Dirk, and KG are all in the same super star level (all are in the top 20 on the current player ranking). Then you add in Webber, Sheed, and Gasol. Throw in technically Malone had a few decent years in the early 00's. 19 of the top 51 (tie at 50) WS seasons were power forwards in the decade and 30 of the top 100. 23 of the top 100 and 13 of the top 50 for the 90's.

I like the comments here on 80's for 3's but not sure I'm sold. The shooting guard has always been a weak position imo, but I can see a case for the 00's being up there. Not sure I'm sold on it though.

I like the PGs now honestly, and Harden I guess can be thrown in there now too since he played point last year, although CP3 will take that spot now. But the talent is unbelievable, while the game these days caters to their games.

How good were the wings during MJ era?
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.
