Laker's supporting cast - over rated ?

Post#1 » by Silver Bullet » Sat Apr 25, 2009 3:11 am

I keep hearing about how Kobe's supporting cast is so good, it would be insane if they don't win a title. I however don't see how they can win the title, when they have the softest players in the league from 3 to 11 (I didn't include Fisher).
Paul Gasol
Lamar Odom
Vujacic
Ariza
Walton

Which of these players would you be comfortable with taking a game winning bucket ?
Now I know Gasol is an all star, but so is Chris Bosh and the guy deserves to be an all star if the award were for the first 3 and a half quarters. But in the last 4-5 minutes of a close game, I'd rather have Jarron or Jason Collins over Bosh (at least they'd play some defense).

Ask yourself this, if it comes down to making a big bucket, who would you trust more: Mo Williams or Gasol, Boobie Gibson or Ariza.

If it comes down to grabbing a big rebound, who'd you rather have, Varejao or Gasol ?

If you needed a big stop and both Kobe and Lebron has fouled out? who would you trust more, the Lakers or the Cavs.

In every single case, I find myself picking the Cavs - even though I know, the general consensus is that Cavs have a much weaker supporting cast. I see it the other way. The Cavaliers have hard nosed tough guys, who can battle it out, whereas the Lakers supporting cast plays like a bunch of sissies when things get rough.

Are for you real? Every **** person on earth would take Kobe's cast over LeBron's if they had to win 1 game...or if they had to choose which team would EASILY win more games in an 82-game regular season. Who in their right mind would choose Z/Varejao/Pavlovic/West/Mo over Bynum/Gasol/Odom/Ariza/Fisher with Phil on the sidelines? Look at the humungous difference in talent!! Bynum/Gasol alone are worth more than Cleveland's entire **** roster.

Kobe's cast sucks. How else can you explain him going 5-24 and lakers are still in position to win on the road against one of the toughest home teams in the nba?

They lack mental focus.

I would too, for an 82 game season I would take Kobe's supporting cast over the Cavs. But in an NBA Finals Game 7, or in a physical series against the Celtics, I'd rather have Lebron's supporting cast.

The Lakers players might be better in the first 45 mins of a game, but they are not better when it counts. They have already squandered leads of 26 points, 30 points and 22 points in huge games in the last two playoffs alone.

Cavs have the much deeper team, but Lakers have more star power. Gasol is the best player on either team's cast by a wide, wide margin. But the Cavs have a deeeeep bench. The system and the way LeBron works off of everyone lets people plug in pretty seamlessly.

They (Lakers') bench certainly lacks the spark from last year. Vujacic can't shoot, Farmar wasn't the same since the injury (wasn't that good before anyways). Even though I like how Josh Powell is playing, I for one miss Turiaf's hustle and (more) energy.

The bright side is Shannon Brown showing that he can play, and Lamar coming off the bench stabilizes the second unit.

In general, they are overrated compared to last season.

Bynums production in first 3 games vs UT:

Game 1 2-5 FG, 3-5 FT's, 3 reb's, 2 TO's, 0 blks, 5 fouls, 7 pts

Game 2 5-11 FG, 0-2 FT, 4 reb's, 3 TO's, 4 blks, 2 fouls, 10 pts

Game 3 1-2 FG, 2-2 FT, 2 reb's, 2 TO's, 0 blks, 5 fouls, 4 pts

That is Jason Collins good. Illgauskas/Varejao is kicking Bynums ass in production.

Derek Fishers production

Game 1 8 pts, 4 reb's, 1 asst, 1 TO
Game 2 11 pts, 1 reb, 5 asst, 5 TO's
Game 3 7 pts, 3 reb's, 2 asst, 0 TO's

Gasol is a better than avg player, I don't think he's a great player. He allows himself to get pushed around too much, and can't score in traffic. He shoots great %'s because he gets wide open 15 ftrs off of the triangle. But Boozer and Milsap are making him look silly.

People thinking that the Lakers roster is so above the rest of the league really aren't paying attention. The Lakers are a highly SKILLED team. Well the best way to beat skill is bust it in the mouth. Get physical with them. Bynum was suppose to be the missing ingredient but you can't make a difference sitting on the bench in foul trouble......
I'm so tired of the typical......

Um Ariza is a stud and we know about Gasol. Even Bynum is a top 10 center in the NBA.

What more does Kobe want?

Overrated? Last night is a perfect exemple why they're not. On the road to one of the best home teams in the league. Kobe had one of his worst playoff performances ever missing 19 of 24 shots, and yet they still had a chance to win the game on the last possession.

It took Kobe shooting his team completely out of it just to lose a game on the road to the Jazz by 2, and you come up with this thread now?

I don't think I'm changing my sig anytime soon, Kobe fans clearly need a dose of reality still.

Kobe has the best frontcourt rotation in the NBA.

Over Rated isn't the proper word:

They are who we thought they are

They lack defense, Bynum doesn't fix that, he doesn't rebound nor play defense, all he wants is the ball on offense

Their bench is crap besides Odom

And their starting 5 is one of the best, Simple as that.

they may lack defense, but they are far from being over rated... Odom.. Bynum... Gasol... Ariza... are you serious? and they have a bunch of 3 point shooters..

give lebron that team and they would win 75 games

No, not overrated at all, if anyone considers them overrated, it's only to hype Media Queen Bryant. They have a solid front-court, their bench brings a great spark, with a mix of athleticism, and high Bball IQ players.

Kobe is 5th on his team in PER for the playoffs thus far and is 4th in Win Shares. But yet they are overrated?
