57 Fouls, Really?

Post#1 » by tsherkin » Tue Nov 10, 2009 4:23 am

OK, that was a joke.

The refs called 57 fouls in the Raps/Spurs game tonight. WTF is that?

San Antonio shot 44 FTAs, Toronto 29. 56 points were scored on FTMs.

That's bloody absurd.

Raps can't play D. Makes sense to me. Maybe they started fouling to slow the Spurs' game down.

Yeah thats bad. Last year in the playoffs the Cavs had like 35 FTs and the Magic had over 50. There were so many BS calls. If the refs start calling fouls early it gets really bad by the end.

There were a bunch of ''veteran'', ''crafty'', ''ticky tacky'', or ''initiated contact'' fouls on the Raptors.

Bosh got a bunch of FTs too, but he's absolutely beasting in that regard on a nightly basis.

I hate how games are called. Players shouldn't be looking for fouls, it shouldn't be that type of system. Guys should be looking to score, not looking to flail into fouls.

Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

What about Hedo's stupid foul with 2 seconds left? It's just two fouls but the Spurs were just simply more aggressive...

Did you actually watch the game? Neither team was looking for fouls, the refs were just calling all types of ticky tacky fouls. The flow of the game was terrible.

most were good calls. they couldn't stop the Spurs' penetration. Bellenlli, Turk, Calderon can't guard a chair.

*shrugs* I like Oden and I think he's doing just fine this year.

I was just aghast at how poor the officiating was in that game. I mean, sometimes teams earn their fouls and whatever, and that's fine, and it's certainly true that Toronto is a terrible defensive squad (thanks, Mr. Colangelo, for ignoring the most glaring deficiency in our team), but this was an egregious display of poor officiating.

I didn't watch, it was just a general statement.

Pfft. That's nothing. There were 5 intentional fouls by the Raptors in the final minute. The Denver/Portland game had 60 fouls without any intentional fouls to stop the clock. The game resulted in 90 FT attempts.

I definitely agree with you though, players are looking for the fouls instead of just playing the game.

The scary part of this game is that the rate of fouls called dropped in the second half despite those intentional fouls. My halftime post from the GB game thread:

31 fouls called in the first half of the Spurs-Raptors game...the top seven in minutes played for Toronto all have two or more fouls (including Bosh and Turkoglu with three apiece), while three of the four big men that the Spurs have used were in foul trouble at some point. This is silly.

It was one of the worst refereed games I've ever witnessed. I don't know that it favoured either team that much (though the foul disparity in the second half was significant), but it was extremely frustrating to watch.

In addition to simply blowing the whistle so frequently, there were a handful of truly awful calls -- a blocking foul on Dejuan Blair that was an obvious charge on Bosh, a missed cylinder interference call late that looked to be as easy a call as you could hope for -- that left me open-mouthed.

I was under the impression that you had to give players room to catch the ball before drawing a foul. Blair was already on him as Bosh was catching the ball..but Bosh was also on the move and it should have been an offensive foul if the ball wasn't thrown to him. So how does that work? I've seen players get called for defensive fouls doing that when the ball is being inbounded.

anyways..the refereeing sucked both ways, but it's not that much worse than some of the other games I've seen this season
