You should take off the "free throw" part in your title, because Rondo is one of the worst PG shooters of all time.

You know who had hands like Dr. J's?
Julius Erving.

Some of it might be in his head but he's also got terrible shooting mechanics.

mechanics are overrated.

peja, reggie miller & kevin martin all have funky ass looking mechanics...and all are/were great shooters.
ben wallace looks like he has a decent shot, and is the worst ft shooter in the history of the nba.
joakim noah has one of the funkiest shots of all time, and he's shooting 17% better from the line this year than rondo....and he's not that far off the league average.

you can be a bad shooter with good form, or a good shooter with bad form. it's about co-ordination, consistency, repetition, and confidence.

Rondo's hands are def not bigger than Jordan's or SURELY not bigger than Yao's. Bad excuse. And in fact, the bigger your hands, the easier it is to control the ball. Just repetition and/or nerves.

^^^ Exactly, it's not about how large his hands are--he's had them his entire life. The only way that would make a difference in his FT shooting would be if they grew from average to enormous overnight. Then, I could see him saying "WTF am I supposed to do with these?" With him, it's just one of those things on the to-do list. Like others have said, it's more than likely a mental thing and he'll probably get it together sooner or later.

during the knicks/celtics game earlier clyde made the msg camera look at rondo's hands when he holds the ball and he shoots the ball with his palm when (according to clyde) it's all in the fingertips.

I always felt like fluidness and consistency of a player's mechanics played a pretty big role. Ben Wallace's form isn't terrible, but it's not fluid or consistent either.

Of course it matters, had he hit them the Celtics would have probably won the game. And every game counts in the east for the title contending teams.

Poor shooting mechanics. He just looks uncomfortable shooting. Compare his form to a guy like Ray Allen's form.

you can have a somewhat unconventional shooting form but there needs to be consistency and it should at least be fluid without any hitches.

I also dispute the notion that big hands make it harder to shoot the ball, I can shoot a size 6 ball much easier than a size 7 because I can get a much better grip on the ball compared to a size 7.
