Dallas/Washington "close" to deal Per Stein

Butler For Howard Was Close Before Cuban Walked Away

The Wizards have offered Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson to the Mavericks for Josh Howard and a small expiring contract.

The deal was getting close but Dallas owner Mark Cuban decided he wanted to continue shopping for other options.

*sigh* When will the Mavs realize that they aren't going to get much for Howard...

EDIT: UPDATE: Stein says Dallas and Washington are close to a deal.

They want Haywood too if they have to swallow useless Stevenson.

They need a center if they want to compete, taking just Butler and a Stevenson does nothing for them.

If we have to take Stevenson's terrible contract we should get Haywood too.

Jamison+Butler for Josh+Damp is not a good trade. They probably wanted Beaubois too. I think WASH thinks too highly of Bulter and Jamison. So does Boston if they give up 2 1st rounders for him.

Yup, they want Haywood.

I don't watch the Wiz, is that 10/10 Haywood puts up just empty stats, or he is a legit player?

He is a very good defender. Could fit nicely with Dirk.

What does Washington want another headcase on their team? I guess Howard is an expiring contract. But I hope my C's can still pull something off and if not them hopefully Houston get Butler and Haywood.

It will be just the Mavs luck for Howard to get his head on straight as soon as he is in a new environment.

Please, even Howard with a straight head sucks. All the guy does is shoot step-back jumpers. He's done. Under 40% for the year. Even at his peak, he's not 2/3rds the players Butler is.

haywood is legit. great defender. probably top 5 post defenders in the league. inept on offense but arguably the best offensive rebounded in the game. hes one of the most popular players on the wiz board. i will be very sad to see him go

Nice. Thanks for the scouting report.

I wonder if it will be:

Kidd
Butler
Marion
Dirk
Haywood/Damp

Or if Butler is incapable of playing the 2:

Kidd
Terry/Butler
Marion
Dirk
Haywood/Damp

butler is definitly more effective playing the 3. he is a capable defender at either position but his offense is much more effective when he plays the 3....which isnt saying much since his offense has been below average this year. he isnt really a catch and shoot player. he likes to isolate, size up his defender then make his move. he is also a fairly poor 3point shooter.

So I wonder if Marion will come off the bench then...

Stevenson is pretty much worthless, right?

SO WORTHLESS. his confidence has been shot to hell. he used to be a very consistent 3 point shooter and an above average defender but the last two seasons hes been HISTORICALLY bad. he continues to get minutes here and there under flip because he is still a decent defender but every time he shoots everyone knows it going to clank off the rim. maybe a new system will help shake things up but i doubt he will get any minutes in dallas

Cool cool. Thanks for all your thoughts zaRdsAndZeRos.

From Dallas end - Josh seems to play better when he is motivated. As soon as trade rumors start to creep up he plays better. Then they subside, and he resorts back to step back jumpers.

He used to be good at getting into the lane with some jackknife moves, but now just settles for outside jumpshots. He also thinks he is a good 3 point shooter but he isn't.

He is either injured or "injured" (read: high, hungover, or simply disinterested) a lot of the time.

Damn, I just looked at his profile....dude used to be a 20/7/2 guy. A lot of people think he lost interest when his buddy Devin was traded. Perhaps a change of scenery would do him good.
