If you have nothing better to do then write out an essay on something like this then i feel sorry for you. Wade has had the better peak, better prime and has the success and accolades to go along with it thus he is going to be ranked higher all time which i already stated. So i guess if Michael Jordan never went to the conference finals then he'd still be the best ever right? Players to a degree are going to ranked on what type of playoff success they've had whether its fair or not that's perception. Deal with it.

You really just ducked what he said, and what he said seemed pretty well thought out. It really just seems like you're just going with your stance "just cause", in fact your last sentence almost straight up implies that.

That's an interesting revised list. Not sure if I agree with the names in ranking order, but I wouldn't argue, because all those players listed are damn great!

My personal list would be:

1.Michael Jordan
2.Bill Russell
3.Wilt Chamberlain
4.Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
5.George Mikan
6.Oscar Robertson
7.Magic Johnson
8.Larry Bird
9.John Havlicek
10.Tim Duncan
11.Hakeem Olajuwon
12.Shaq O'Neal
13.Lebron James
14.Kobe Bryant
15.Bob Cousy
16.Jerry West
17.Moses Malone
18.Kevin Garnett
19.Karl Malone
20.Dirk Nowitzki
21.Charles Barkley
22.Julius Erving
23.Isiah Thomas
24.David Robinson
25.Elgin Baylor
26.George Gervin
27.Dolph Schayes
28.Wes Unseld
29.Bob Pettit
30. John Stockton
31.Walt Frazier
32.Rick Barry

And the list goes on... I can't list anymore, because my brain will explode, but hopefully you guys get the picture. I'm sure some will disagree, but that's fine, because I don't mind the debate. But if or when the 50 Greatest NBA Players list is ever revised, I do believe guys from the late 90's-00's/Post Jordan-era will have to be added. Players like Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, Garnett, Dirk, Wade, Kidd will strongly have to be considered.

Wow, I've never seen Mikan and Havlicek rated so high. I wonder what his thoughts on that are.

Mikan's probably ranked that high due to historical significance.

Could be dominance too; Mikan was the most dominant player of all time with the possible exception of Wilt/Russell (if you count their dominance over the rest of the league instead of their relative close competition with each other). Not sure why Havlicek though.

Yea, I can see the point about Mikan. I don't penalize him for longevity either. Still, the era is a concern.

When u tally up both players achievements and accolades, I had to consider them high up in the rankings. Still, that is my personal ranking list and you guys are more than welcome to respectfully disagree.

I've been following this Top 100 project, though I haven't the time to participate, and I appreciate the quality of the discussion around the project.

I developed a few years ago a rough Hall Rating for the NBA based on ASPM, though I only applied it to the modern era (since the mid 70s).

I recently revised the methodology and decided to apply it to Win Shares, as the best stat for covering all of NBA history. The full post is on my website, but I wanted to show the top 100 list here as my contribution to the discussion. This is a statistics-only top 100, but it does include playoff performance.

My initial thoughts:

    - Looks like a pretty solid list
    - Note the clear top 3 and LeBron the clear #4 behind them. A clear tier 3 from 5 to 11, then tier 4 from 12-15. And then in tier 5 are Bird, Kobe, and KG…
    - It would be good to go through and weight each playoff run based on some more comprehensive analysis (weight by round of playoffs, for instance).
    - Win Shares likes Jerry West, David Robinson, John Stockton, and many of the very old and current players
    - This methodology doesn’t care much for ringzz, apparently

Re: Top 100 Project Pre-Lists

I developed a few years ago a rough Hall Rating for the NBA based on ASPM, though I only applied it to the modern era (since the mid 70s).

I recently revised the methodology and decided to apply it to Win Shares, as the best stat for covering all of NBA history. The full post is on my website, but I wanted to show the top 100 list here as my contribution to the discussion. This is a statistics-only top 100, but it does include playoff performance.

When u tally up both players achievements and accolades, I had to consider them high up in the rankings. Still, that is my personal ranking list and you guys are more than welcome to respectfully disagree.

Actually I would guess I'm one of the bigger Mikan boosters here. As for Hondo though, based on achievements and accolades (other than ring count) . . . can you really put him ahead of even partial contemporaries Bob Pettit and Elgin Baylor?

When u tally up both players achievements and accolades, I had to consider them high up in the rankings. Still, that is my personal ranking list and you guys are more than welcome to respectfully disagree.

Actually I would guess I'm one of the bigger Mikan boosters here. As for Hondo though, based on achievements and accolades (other than ring count) . . . can you really put him ahead of even partial contemporaries Bob Pettit and Elgin Baylor?

It's really difficult to rank players from the past and present. I think too often as fans we get caught up in the moment as far as ranking all time greats. We all have a case for why this or that player should be ranked ahead of another, but I honestly believe you can't legitimize rankings.

Maybe not, but it's sort of what we do for fun on this board, particularly in the offseason. As ThaRegul8r is fond of saying, you can set criteria and try to judge how well a player fits that criteria. You set the criteria of achievements and accolades as your reason for rating Havlicek well above Baylor and Pettit who were contemporaries through at least part of Havlicek's career. Statistically, Havlicek doesn't rate with them, he isn't appreciably more efficient and he can't compare in terms of scoring and rebounding (that's my shorthand for achievements unless you are ring counting where Havlicek is far and away the winner -- if that's so, not a problem, that's your definition of achievements). So, let's look at the accolades you listed for Havlicek:

4 1st team All-PRO
7 2nd team All-PRO
1 Finals MVP
8 All-Defense 1st and 2nd teams

Now for Pettit
10 1st team All-PRO
1 2nd team All-PRO (his final season where he was injured part of the year)
2 MVPS
Finals MVP wasn't awarded in the 50s but he would certainly have won it in 58.
All Defense teams weren't awarded until 1969 but Pettit would not have been in Havlicek's class

And Baylor
10 1st team All-PRO, both Pettit and Baylor were consistently rated ahead of Havlicek in this voting through the 60s
Never won a finals though West won a finals MVP in a losing cause; wasn't known for his defense

They are your criteria; do you find the All-Defense teams more important than the extra All-PRO 1st teams (and Pettit's 2 MVPs) or are giving Havlicek extra credit for playing in the 70s (which I consider a weaker era than the 60s) where Pettit and to a lesser extent Baylor played some of their careers in the 50s (which I consider even weaker than the 70s)?

I've recently been working on my top 100 players of all time as well. Now before I post my rankings please be aware I am a rather young basketball fan(18) an I've only watched basketball since 2004. Now I do love the game an have played all 4 seasons in high school. Beside the point I've never really gotten to watch Magic or Bird play let alone Wilt or Russell however I have done my homework an I've re-watched some playoff performances. Ultimately any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

1. MJ
2. Russell
3. Kareem

The elite 3. While I view my top 10 as a class above the rest; these 3 are the gods of basketball. MJ was the greatest winner when the NBA had the most talent. Russell is the greatest leader of the greatest dynasty in all of sports. I don't care what era the man was one of the ultimate athletic freak with impenetrable defense, the ultimate motor, an perhaps the best BBIQ an motor of all time.

4. Wilt
5. Magic Johnson
6. Larry Bird
7. Shaquille O'Neal
8. Tim Duncan
9. Hakeem "The Dream"
10. LBJ

This is practically etched into stone. With the exception if Duncan an Shaq; 2 hours ago Duncan was 7 an not Shaq is 7 in my eyes they are equals in totally different ways.

11. Óscar Robinson
12. Jerry West
13. Kevin Garrnet
14. Julius Erving
15. Kobe Bryant
16. Dirk Nowitzki
17. Moses Malone
18. Elgin Baylor
19. Jason Kidd
20. Charles Barkley
21. Scottie Pippen.
22. David Robinson
23. Isiah Thomas
24. Hondo Havlicek
25. George Mikan
26. Dwayne Wade
27. The Mailman

I view Garrnet as having one if the most underrated peaks of all time. Garrnett averaged 22/13/6 in 2004 plus he's a top 10 defender of all time. Kobe is one of the most overrated players of all time. Bryant can score crazy amount but also take a ridiculous amounts of shots. Besides that he also was in my opinion lead to(not carried) 3 titles by Shaq. I over rank Kidd I know. But he can score, pass, defend, rebound, an is an exceptional leader. Scottie is another person I view as underrated. When Jordan was retire Scottie finished 3rd in MVP voting an average 22/9/6 plus 3 steals. I might have Isaiah higher than most but my biggest knock on point guards is that they don't with champion ships or very many at least. Kidd, Payton, Robinson, Stockton, an Nash have 3 rings total. Magic an Isaiah are the exceptions. I think Isaiah's defense is underrated an he's a great passer an scorer. Mikan is the Russell of the 1950s.

28. Walt Frazier
29. Clyde The Glide
30. Bob Pettit
31. John Stockton
32. Steve Nash
33. Dominique Wilkins
34. Patrick Ewing
35. Rick Barry
36. Elvin Hayes
37. Sam Jones
38. Kevin Durant
39. Dave Cowens
40. Kevin McHale
41. Bob Lanier
42. Chris Paul
43. Artis Gilmore
44. Bill Walton

Just a few things i'll address.

Your top 10 ain't bad i just think Duncan and Shaq clearly deserve to be above Bird at this point although it's your opinion.

Jason Kidd, Pippen and Thomas are all too high. Jason Kidd is more 35-40 range, Pippen 26-30 imo, and Thomas 30-35 range. Kobe shouldn't be lower than 12th but I'm not going to beat a dead horse when it comes to Kobe. And finally Karl Malone at 27 is incredibly low. He's easily a top 20 player ever.

Besides what i mentioned i don't see any major issues. Just figured i'd give you a little feedback.

Thanks for the feed back. Kinda what I was looking 4.

I will admit I'm am bias towards Jason Kidd he was my favorite player growing up as a kid. An I played point guard all through Highschool an middle school an he was the guy I tried to emulate. But I don't understand why he is rated so low. The only deference between him an magic is about 5 inches haha. No but seriously there about the same Magic is slightly better score, rebounder, an assist wise, plus he is better in the full court because no one is as good as Magic in the full court. However the assists can(?) slightly be attributed that the Showtime Lakers were stacked with talent. But Kidd is a better an smarter defender plus better in the half court.

Isaiah however is the one of the few exceptions to the rule that star point guards don't win championships. I can't see any valid arguments for Nash, Payton, an Stockton over Isiah. He average 22/9 an was one of the most feared score an pass point guards of all time.

With Pippen I've said countless times he's one of the most underrated players of all time. When Jordan was retired he averaged 22/9/6/3 plus is IMO the best perimeter defender of all time. Plus he finished 3rd in MVP voting an probably should have won. But criticism an off court issues held him back.

Mailman- yeah I agree I just think the 26 players I put above him are just as good if not better. I think 24-27 are crazy close.

If you want more feedback, I'd like to say that I could never understand why so many people rank Dominique Wilkins easily over Alex English. Nique at 33 and Alex at 51 is IMO way too big of a gap. Personally, I rank English a bit higher. Other than being a spectacular dunker, what else does he really have over English?
English was a more efficient scorer on a very similar volume (in their primes, I mean), better defender (Wilkins had all the tools to be an excellent defender, but never really gave too much effort) and playmaker (he even played point forward for short stretches, Nique never did). Wilkins was a bit better rebounder and took a bit better care of the ball (but that's mostly because English was more of a playmaker, created more for others, while Wilkins was pretty much just a scorer), and better as far as drawing fouls.

Neither played a lot of games in the playoffs (English played 68, Wilkins 56), but English looks better. He was every bit as good in the playoffs as he was in the regular season, while Wilkins (who wasn't an especially efficient scorer even in the RS, compared to some of the other high scoring SFs in the 80s like Dantley, English, King, even Aguirre) clearly declined in the postseason in terms of efficiency. It was a bit easier to slow down Nique, if you clogged the paint, because his jumpshot was much less reliable than English's. English did most of his damage from the midrange area, 15-20 feet, and he was money on those jumpers (and his shot was basically impossible to bother, as he released the ball so damn high).

Both guys had great longevity (English actually scored more points during the 80s than any other player). Nique's prime was a bit longer (9.5 seasons with 25+ PPG, English had 8), but they played basically the same amount of minutes (about 38000 in the RS, and a bit more than 2000 in the playoffs).

Alex English vs Dominique Wilkins is a lot like Paul Pierce vs Vince Carter - one guy (Nique and Vince) got a lot more publicity because he was such a spectacular athlete and dunker, but the other guy was a bit more efficient, better in the playoffs, and more fundamentally sound. For me, it's a really weird phenomenon that most people rank Pierce over Carter, but not English over Wilkins. That's inconsistent.

English vs Wilkins is certainly close, I don't want my post to look like an anti-Nique tirade, where I highlight just his flaws, but I just want to say that everyone should at least admit that Alex and Nique are very close, even if they prefer Wlkins. I really don't see any reason to have them ranked more than 5 spots apart from each other.

Your list is awful. Kobe "takes a ridiculous amount of shots?". What kind of criticisms is that? Aside from the fact that his game goes well beyond scoring, it's also a fact that literally every volume scorer is going to shoot a lot.
Led to 3 titles by Shaq? What does this mean? Why not simply focus on what he did and how he played instead of this nonsense. Even if you want to dismiss 3 of his rings because "he wasn't THE MAN( :noway: ), he still has 2 titles and 4 Finals appearances as the best player on his team, which is literally more than than the vast majority of all-time greats. It's hilarious how wanna tear down Bryant for having Shaq, but have Oscar and West ahead even though each only have 1 ring, and neither were the best players on their team.

Jason Kidd at 19? K.Malone at 27? Isiah Thomas at 23? Hondo at 24?

And you think Bryant is overrated... Hilarious stuff.

Why do you have to argue about Bryant in every thread? It's the easiest way to derail this thread if we start repeating the same things all over again.

Here, I definitely agree. I really can't see how Malone could be so low, or behind these three guys.

44. Bill Walton
45. Nate Archibald
46. Willis Reed
47. The Truth
48. Kevin Johnson
49. Allen Iverson
50. George Gervin
51. Alex English
52. Dolph Schayes
53. Alex English
54. Reggie Miller
55. Alonzo Mourning
56. Robert Parish
57. Tracy McGrady
58. Ray Allen
59. Carmelo Anthony
60. Bill Cunningham

Your list is awful. Kobe "takes a ridiculous amount of shots?". What kind of criticisms is that? Aside from the fact that his game goes well beyond scoring, it's also a fact that literally every volume scorer is going to shoot a lot.

Jason Kidd at 19? K.Malone at 27? Isiah Thomas at 23? Hondo at 24?

And you think Bryant is overrated... Hilarious stuff.

Kobe is overrated. Now let's not even talk about that I don't think he would be the same player he is today if it wasn't for Shaq. Kobe when I say Kobe is a inefficient volume scorer it's because in order for him to be an all time great he needs to shoot. 45% for someone who is often considered top 8 an by common fans top 2, is GARBAGE! Lebron 50%, Michael 50%, The Logo 47.5%, an Oscar 48%. Over the course of a career that those are large differences. A "ridiculous amount of shots" is shooting 27 a games in 06 but he average 35 a game so people call him a hero, he's not he's overrated. He doesn't have the efficiency to be an all time great.

No let's talk about playoffs. He played poorly in 04 shooting 38% an 17% from 3 an In 08 he shot 40% from the field an average 4 turn overs a game.

An I've already defended J-Kidd, IT, an Pippen read up a little bit.
