Highest ranking for these players?

Post#1 » by The Infamous1 » Mon Jul 28, 2014 5:01 pm

At their peaks. For example Michael Jordan's highest ranking in the league was 1, best player in the game

1.) Chauncey Billups
2.) Grant Hill
3.) Deron Williams
4.) Elton Brand
5.) Patrick Ewing
6.) Joe Johnson

Chauncey Billups - fringe top 10 in a few seasons, and I think he was top 10 in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

Grant Hill - top 5-ish in 2000 (Shaq, Duncan, Zo and Mailman are the only guys who are IMO clearly better, he has an argument over everyone else). I'm not sure if I'd put him 5th, but I'd be inclined to do so. Hill vs Payton would be a great debate. KG IMO wasn't quite there yet, but I'd probably put him 7th, after Hill and Payton.
Similar in 1997 - MJ, Malone, Hakeem, Ewing and Shaq were all IMO clearly better, maybe also Mourning, Stockton and Pippen. Shaq played just 51 games, but I'd still rather put him ahead of Grant simply because he was better when he actually played (and he was also healthy for the playoffs). Top 10 is absolutely a sure thing, realistically probably 7th or 8th.

Deron Williams - IMO top 10 from 2008 to 2010. I think he played on a very similar level to Billups, in their primes.

Elton Brand - Kobe, Wade, Dirk, Nash, LeBron and Garnett were IMO the only guys who were better than Brand in 2006 - I'd give Elton a slight edge over Duncan, because TD had plantar fasciitis for a large part of the regular season, and was somewhat limited as a result -his playoff performance was fantastic, but Brand played extremely well in both the RS and PS. So I'd say Brand was the 7th best player in the league at his peak. I'd say he probably makes the top 10 in 2007 as well, 9th or 10th, off the top of my head.

Patrick Ewing - somewhat surprising to see his name here, as he's much better than those other guys, career-wise, but I'd say he was definitely top 5 more than once. In 1990, I'd say only Jordan and Magic were better - I'd put Ewing slightly over Barkley, Malone, Hakeem and D-Rob, so 3rd best player in the league, top 5 in a few other seasons, and top 10 pretty much for a decade between 1988-97, top 5-ish more often than not.
Frankly, I have 1990 Ewing as a top 20 peak of all-time.

Joe Johnson - clearly the worst player here, but being the worst in such great company still doesn't mean bad...Good enough for top 15-20 around 2008-11, and he likely was close to top 15 at his best.

Billups- I'd say borderline top 15 in 2006, but there were a lot of good players that year, so I'd be more comfortable saying top 20. That was Billups best season, but as these things often go, his highest ranking might be 2009, when I'd say he has a better chance of being top 15, or at least borderline top 15.

Grant Hill- Well, I think his peak as a player was 2000 when I'd rank him 8th. Would have put him 7th above C-Webb and maybe 6th above Payton, but I dropped him a bit due to his ankle injury late in the 2000 season that essentially ended his prime. However, despite 2000 being his peak, I wouldn't say that was the year he ranked highest. That would be '97 when he'd probably be top 5 behind only Jordan, Malone, Shaq and maybe Hakeem. Though that's not completely guaranteed since Pippen, Ewing and Payton would be up there.

Deron- Borderline top 10, or 11-15 range from 2008-2011. He might make my top 10 in 2008, and I'd say just cracks my top 10 for 2010.

Brand- Well, he was top 10 in 2006, imo. I wouldn't put him higher than 8th, but that is where I'd rank him in 2006.

Ewing- top 3 in 1990 behind only Jordan and Magic. Might even put him top 2 in '92 behind only Jordan. He's right there with Robinson, though Robinson's injury kept him out for the playoffs, so I'm leaning towards Ewing.

Johnson- Borderline top 25 from 2008-2010, though he wouldn't make my top 20 any of those years.
