The Jimmy Butler aka "Jimmy Buckets" thread 2014-15

He looks like he's having a break out season

21.6 PER, 0.210 WS/48 the highest of any bulls player 122 ORTG / 105 DRTG

22.0 USG% with 15.4 AST% and 8.8 TOV%

Shooting 49.7/33.3/79.5 with a TS% of 59.8 and he's drawing fouls at a rate of .510, 34 percent of his shots are at the rim and he's shooting 75 percent

his raw pts rebounds assists steals and blocks are 20.2/6.2/3.5/1.5/0.5

He's also had to shore up more defensive responsibility due to noah being out of form

I think Klay, Harden and Jimmy Buckets are the top 3 shooting guards in the league

Yeah with the lack of 2 guards I think he can definitely make the east all star team if he keeps up his production

32 points tonight on 7-13 FG, 18-20 FT. Last night, 25 on 8-16 FG, 8-9 FT. It's getting harder and harder to chalk Jimmy's improvement up to small sample size.

I don't see any reason Butler can't keep up this relative level of play. The guy has drawn FTs well since college and now as his volume has gone up, its not a skill that is going to go away. This is where the bulk of his points and efficiency come from, he only shoots 12 to 14 times a game and tends to be around .500 on FGs due to how inside his game is. Almost reminiscent of Corey Maggette but without the ball stopping and pounding. He's just a bull, no pun intended.

Further, with or without Rose, the Bulls need Butler to keep scoring. The team didn't really have a credible 2nd option anyway, Gasol is more like a third, and Rose looks like he will be shaky as the 1st option even if he does manage to get playing all year.

His only real brake is Tom Thibodeau wearing him down with overuse, and minutes, on top of his large defensive burden of guarding the best wing. That's a ton of energy to play both sides at such a high level, and in a very physical manner. If he starts getting nagging injuries, indeed like last year with his turf toe, his play could start deteriorating.

20 games before I can say he or anyone will keep up with this leap in production

I think this increase in production is real and here to stay. The way he attacks the basket, that type of strength isn't a fluke.

23/8/7 tonight.

Throwing a comparison out there: John Havlicek.

Guy gets drafted to a truly great defensive team with an elite head coach. First few years in the league, he's more an off-ball guy on offense with poor individual scoring efficiency but gives great effort on defense and is very good on that end. Then he improves and becomes a legit 2-way player at an all-star and possibly all-nba level. Not a spectacular athlete in the run/jump sense, but he plays at incredibly intensity on both ends for 40 minutes. Master of positioning.

Sounds like Hondo a little bit, right? Hondo had the GOAT endurance for a wing arguably. Butler might enter that category the way he is playing on both ends every night. That is his greatest asset. Very strong player, too.

Spectacular post, but I had to single out this one line that I disagree with. He actually is a tremendous athlete in the run/jump sense (his max vert is pushing 40 inches), and earlier in his career he was known primarily for his ability to finish oops and transition plays. Guy is actually pretty much of a freak.

But other than that, good post, and interesting comparison.

The Chicago Bulls' Jimmy Butler and the Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry on Wednesday were named the Kia NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month, respectively, for games played in October/November.

Congrats to Butler on player of the month - very well deserved. If he can keep this level of play up and the Bulls don't get rocked by injuries, I think they are the favorites in the EC.

Wow. That's actually an excellent comparison, too. Butler is a little taller, though Moncrief seemed to have insanely long arms for his height, Dwyane Wade style.

Butler and Moncrief share being dangerous post threats with great strength and positioning. And of course, both dominate defensively. Nice comparison by Isiah.

I know it was against a porous defensive team and a horrific defender in Tim Hardaway Jr., but Butler obliterated NYK tonight with a career-high 35 points. Added 7 assists and 4 steals as well.

His post game is instinctual as he's able to feel with his body where the defender is leaning, read where the possible doubles come from, and then react accordingly. It's a smooth, quick read, too. And he's strong as hell, so he draws a lot of fouls by exploiting other SGs. Love watching a small go to work in the post.

Honestly in terms of "feel" he's pushing star level. The scoring was great last night, but I was most impressed by the way he was setting up his guys. It's startling that he's never in his life been an offensive focal point, and then gets dropped into this situation at his age and just plays smooth, smart, efficient basketball. I have really high hopes for the kid.

Re: post game, he's got a great instinctual thing going on. His fadeaways looked real smooth as well. I also really liked that he was making quick, decisive moves on the catch. And he seems like he's already mastered the jab step pull-up, nd if he's hitting that at a high rate it's basically impossible to guard him.

Going to have to watch him this year, haven't seen a Moncrief level of defense or that quick slither to the hoop from him; I thought his top end was former Bulls great Jerry Sloan but he may be exceeding that from what people are saying here.

I think he has the potential to be better than 2011 Derrick rose

And that's not even that outlandish iirc many people say he wasn't even a top 10 player that year

I could see butler as a future fringe top 10 talent, especially since his offense is growing at ridiculous levels
