To me if a player has one mvp award that season should automatically be selected as there peak season.

Bob Pettit was better player in early 60s than in 50s. Competition matters - Pettit couldn't win MVP over Russell or Wilt. Unseld has MVP in his rookie season, but I'm not sure that's his finest season overall.

That's not necessarily true.

MVP is reflective of the competition at the time not of how good you were as a player at the time.

MVP is so hard to win that generally it will be your peak season but doesn't have to be. Dirk is a good example. People have his peak at 06 or 2011 not 07.

Also that MVP is a very team record oriented award. i.e. Kobe not having much of a chance in 06 and 07 even though the media generally proclaimed him as best player and when he finally got a legit all-star sidekick in 08 they gave him MVP.

2014
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

2014. Pretty obvious. It was a pretty underrated season imo. It was one of the best MVP seasons ever.

So you would take 2007 Dirk over 2006? Doesn't make sense. He put up at least as good numbers in '06, and still had a ton of team success in regular season (60 wins), and led his team to the finals as opposed to first round exit in '07. Even 2011 or 2003 belongs over 2007, because of what he did in the playoffs.

2014. Although 2013 wasn't that much worse, he actually did a bit better in the playoffs that season and his regular season is closer than it seems because he didn't get the opportunity that year to go on insane scoring binges with Westbrook playing the whole season.

Going by the thought process in the past couple of threads shouldn't his peak be in 2012?

I mean that was by far his best, most successful postseason. Nevermind him actually being at his best as a basketball player in 2014 ability-wise.

If Reggie Jackson doesn`t go off in that one Memphis game I am willing to bet that most people would completely discount Durant's entire season body of work and just flip to a year where he was obviously a worse basketball player.

This completely disregards the value of the PS, so no.

But how much did Kd improve from 2013 to 2014, and how much of it had to do with Westbrook's absence? I agree he improved but i don't think it's by some massive amount.

It's a good starter but not exception to the rule. Personally, peak depends on what they produce in the reg+pos. 2014 is clear cut. He sucks in the pos but his 2014 is too big to ignore. You have to go with 2014. Also it is his pre-surgery year.

It doesn't take into account the talent changes in the league between seasons. I as a player could have a MVP in a year where the other candidates are non-HOFers putting up low numbers or HOFers in down years. Then in another season I could be in the peak of my ability and lose out to a GOAT season where I'm probably better than my MVP year but lose out to a GOAT peak candidate or an individual with a super strong/heartwarming media narrative.
