Positional Peak Project: #1 PG (2007-2016 Era)

Post#1 » by 70sFan » Mon Jul 25, 2016 9:32 pm

This project will be going to make top 5 lists for every position peak-wise in 10-years span. By peak you mean one full season (RS+PS). Vote for your candidate and explain why he is a good pick. I need at least 30 votes per thread to move next.

First round - Point Guard (2007-2016)

I'll go with CP3 2007-08 as the best.

I would suggest adding as many options as you can (which is 10), instead of "other" option. Add Deron Williams and Tony Parker or Chauncey Billups to the poll (replace Rondo with Deron and maybe Lowry with Billups or Parker).

Holly ****, I forgot about Parker and Billups (two of my favorite PGs from last decade). Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I will change poll options

2016 Steph Curry
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim heā€™d look at me like he was bored and say:ā€œHey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.ā€

This doesn't help Nash here as it is after his MVP seasons.

Yes, but Nash in 2007 was pretty much as good as he was in 2005/06 seasons.

2007 Nash was arguable better than 2006 Nash.
2007: 53 FG%, 45% 3 PT (more volume), 26.4/16.5 PTS/AST per 100, 124 oRTG, 23.8 PER, 65.4 TS%, 50.1 AST%, .225 WS/48, 3.8 BPM, 3.9 VORP
2006: 51 FG%, 44 3PT%, 26.7/14.8 PTS/AST per 100, 121 oRTG, 23.3 PER, 63.2 TS%, 44.4 AST%, .212 WS/48, 3.7 BPM, 4.0 VORP

The post-season favors 2006 slightly, but they are so close that I see no significant difference between the two.

I am not sure who to vote for between CP3, Curry, and Nash. CP3 had the best post-season, Curry had the best regular season but he missed some games in the post-season which was crucial and also had the worst post-season. Steve Nash gets more impressive every time I watch his film as his BBIQ is off the charts...

Curry vs Paul in 2015 WCF would have been epic since they are the top 2 PG peaks of the last few years.
But CP3 had injuries (as did 2016 Curry) so this is clearly 2015 Curry for me.

Last 2 seasons Curry was more SG than PG.

Exactly, Curry is not really a point guard.

Not even just offensively but he doesn't even guard the other team's PG half the time. He's no more of a PG than Dwyane Wade or James Harden were.

How is it clearly Curry in 15?

What makes him better than '08 CP3?

I still went with 16 Curry. The closest Cp3 came to Curry's regular season was 2009 but then he was even worse in the playoffs than Curry was. Otherwise you'd have to be putting too much emphasis on 2 playoff rounds.

It's between 2008 Paul and 2016 Curry. Paul is the better playmaker, elite defensive player, and IMO a better team facilitator with great overall impact on his team. CP3 has been one of my favorite players since he came in the league. However Curry had a more historic season overall so I still say Steph.

What the heck lol. This has to be Curry. What has happened to this board post Finals.

He just put up a 31.5 PER (Only Jordan, Bron, Wilt have had higher) on a 73 win team with a +8.5RPM.

Are we just going to crush him for having 1 bad series where he was probably still a bit injured against a pretty bad matchup for him?

Yeah I don't like saying stuff like this but voting against Curry here is kind of insane to me and implies some serious recency bias.
