Pre-Top 100 Project Lists (post your ATL)

Post#1 » by trex_8063 » Tue Jun 13, 2017 4:12 pm

There has once again been interest expressed in having top 100 project participants submit their all-time lists prior to the start of the project itself (mostly just a curiosity, to see how things compare to the final "product").

So to all participants or potential participants of the top 100 project: if you want, please submit----either in this thread, or via PM directly to me if you're not comfortable sharing your list publicly----your all-time list (at least top 50, if not top 100). I will take all lists that I receive by say Friday night or so, and I will create an amalgamated list (and "average" of all those submitted to me) which I will post here shortly after.

Then we can get underway with the top 100 project itself.

6/16/17 EDIT:
OK, I've compiled and processed all the lists from known posters.
How to present it? Well, I wasn't going to simply state the average vote cast for each player, because many posters submitted relatively short lists (so the sample size of votes is pretty small----like often 1 [sometimes spurious] vote----for many "late list" players).

I made a simple point system where a vote for #1 all-time is worth 100 pts; a vote for #2 is worth 99 pts, and so on down to a vote for #100 (ONE other poster besides myself submitted a list of that length) is worth 1 pt.

I'll present the overall point totals from ALL submitted lists (regardless of length) in the first spoiler labeled "Overall pt total rankings". I wasn't sure if that was totally appropriate, though, at least as the sole method of presenting the results. Because so many submitted lists were 25 or less players, certain "middle-ground" players and such will be grossly under-represented by "overall" total score (e.g. guys like Bob Pettit or Scottie Pippen have a dramatically lower total score than someone like Charles Barkley, even though their career values are probably not hugely apart.....it's just because Pettit or Pippen don't crack every top 25 and actually crack very few top 20's). This becomes a bigger issue the further down the list we get (because eventually we reach a range were the sample size of voters is tiny).

So.....since I got so many different length lists (from as few as 6!, to as many as 100, and everything in between), I've chosen some additional methods of review which will be explained below. But first, the quick n' dirty total points from all lists submitted:

Overall Pt Total Rankings (of all players listed on any single list.....again: VERY small sample size for later positions)

Hmm, I've never tried to go out even close to 100 before, but I'll start a list here and keep working on it in the coming days. Feel free to comment of course. Opening with a top 15. Number behind is spot difference from realgm top 100 2014 (obviously current guys will have bigger changes).

1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (+1)
2. Tim Duncan (+3)
3. LeBron James (+4)
4. Michael Jordan (-3)
5. Kevin Garnett (+6)
6. Bill Russell (-3)
7. Wilt Chamberlain (-3)
8. Hakeem Olajuwon (+1)
9. Shaquille O'Neal (-3)
10. Magic Johnson (-2)
11. Kobe Bryant (+2)
12. Larry Bird (-2)
13. Dirk Nowitzki (+3)
14. Oscar Robertson (-2)
15. Jerry West (-)
16. David Robinson (+2)
17. Karl Malone (-)
18. Moses Malone (+1)
19. Charles Barkley (+1)
20. Julius Erving (-6)
21. Chris Paul (+10)
22. Steve Nash (+3)
23. Patrick Ewing (-1)
24. Dwyane Wade (-1)
25. John Stockton (+1)

Edit: Up to 25 now. I'm going to leave 50's guys out for now as I'm still deciding what to do with them, but I expect Mikan/Pettit up pretty high, and Cousy/Schayes will rank as well. Others seem more in the iffy area for now, but some will likely come in later in the project (wouldn't expect top 50).
I bought a boat.

My top 50 as of today:

1. Michael Jordan
2. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
3. LeBron James
4. Bill Russell
5. Magic Johnson
6. Wilt Chamberlain
7. Tim Duncan
8. Shaquille O'Neal
9. Larry Bird
10. Hakeem Olajuwon
11. Jerry West
12. Kobe Bryant
13. Kevin Garnett
14. Julius Erving
15. Oscar Robertson
16. Dirk Nowitzki
17. Karl Malone
18. David Robinson
19. Moses Malone
20. Charles Barkley
21. John Stockton
22. Scottie Pippen
23. George Mikan
24. Patrick Ewing
25. Dwyane Wade
26. Bob Pettit
27. Chris Paul
28. Steve Nash
29. John Havlicek
30. Stephen Curry
31. Kevin Durant
32. Clyde Drexler
33. Pau Gasol
34. Rick Barry
35. Jason Kidd
36. Walt Frazier
37. Gary Payton
38. Elgin Baylor
39. George Gervin
40. Russell Westbrook
41. Reggie Miller
42. Paul Pierce
43. Dwight Howard
44. Alonzo Mourning
45. Ray Allen
46. Willis Reed
47. Artis Gilmore
48. Kawhi Leonard
49. Tracy McGrady
50. Adrian Dantley

Obviously subject to change based on arguments that are provided by other members and weekly tweaks. After about the 20th or so spot I lose confidence in my rankings a bit, and by the 35-40 mark there really isn't much separating these guys, so they are more likely to change. However, my top 15 is set in stone for now.

I don't know if I'm ready to publish a list where Kevin Garnett is ahead of Michael Jordan.

EDIT: Well, he ^ was close lol

1. Michael Jordan
2. Lebron James
3. Kareem Adbul Jabbar
4. Wilt Chamberlain
5. Bill Russell
6. Magic Johnson
7. Shaquille O'Neal
8. Hakeem Olajuwon
9. Tim Duncan
10. Larry Bird
11. Jerry West
12. Oscar Robertson
13. Kobe Bryant
14. Karl Malone

19. Dirk Nowitski
20. John Stockon
21. Dwyane Wade
22. David Robinson
23. Kevin Durant
24. Chris Paul

Not entirely set in stone. I am fairly firm on top 3 for now(but I could bump Kareem out potentially for either Wilt/Russell). Rest not firm at all. Really struggled rounding the last 5 spots.

I hope you do. Not for that reason exactly, but to encourage others to be willing to post rankings they believe in but are afraid others will mock/attack them for. A poster of your credibility doing so makes that much harder for that to be a thing.

Might need to give some of us a bit of time? I'm definitely willing to put a list out there for people to see roughly where I am starting form but need time to put it together. I also need people to accept that I will not be voting exclusively off of my own rankings as I expect my opinions to change and be shaped by the project--some players it may change significantly.

But I can preview the top of the list for now and come back and edit in more later:

1. Russell
2. Mike
3. Lebron
4. Kareem
5. Duncan
6. Shaq

Never apologize for your opinion, just try to back it up with solid analysis because that's definitely an outlier.

Do it. Contrary beliefs aren't a bad thing. We just have to be ready to prove it ;)

100 is tough and requires a lot of time. I'll do 20.

1. Jordan
2. Kareem
3. Wilt
4. Russell
5. Shaq
6. Lebron
7. Bird
8. Magic
9. Kobe
10. Duncan
11. Hakeem
12. Oscar
13. Robinson
14. Dirk
15. K. Malone
16. Dr. J
17. Sir Charles
18. M. Malone
19. KG
20. D. Wade

According to your logic, Tim Duncan doesn't deserve any respect.

1. Michael Jordan
2. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
3. Hakeem Olajuwon
4. LeBron James
5. Magic Johnson
6. Bill Russell
7. Wilt Chamberlain
8. Shaquille O'Neal
9. Kobe Bryant
10. Tim Duncan
11. Larry Bird
12. Jerry West
13. Oscar Robertson
14. Kevin Durant
15. Dirk Nowitzki
16. Julius Erving
17. Moses Malone
18. Charles Barkley
19. Karl Malone
20. Dwyane Wade
21. Stephen Curry
22. David Robinson
23. Kevin Garnett
24. Chris Paul
25. Steve Nash

When you have the greatest peak and career, to me its a no brainer that its MJ. I think the top 4 when you factor in peak, prime, winning, 2-way play and overall dominance they are almost on their own tier. I think Lebron finishes his career as the consensus second greatest ever, he may have the longest prime of anyone and his career value will surpass that of anyone but MJ. I think Duncan was great but when he was asked to volume score his offensive efficiency suffered; I think of him as a bootleg version of Dream. KD has enough career value where i think he was an athletic Dirk with better defense. I see Admiral as a better version of KG, but both ultimately were not ideal lead dogs offensively on title worthy teams. CP3 is a slightly lesser Nash on offense, but much better defensively.

I don't have a list currently. However, I can broadly group players into tiers. I'll do this for twenty-five. Tiers aren't ordered.

Bill Russell
Tim Duncan
Lebron James
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Wilt Chamberlain
Oscar Robertson

Tier 2
Michael Jordan
Larry Bird
Julius Erving
Magic Johnson
Shaquille O'neal
David Robinson
Hakeem Olajuwon
Kevin Garnett

Tier 3
Kobe Bryant
Jerry West
Dirk Nowitzki
Charles Barkley
Elgin Baylor
Karl Malone
John Stockton
Steve Nash
Moses Malone
Chris Paul
Stephen Curry

So Jordan is 7th at best in your list? Seems like a good criteria.

Well, since it seems I have upset you, let me apologize. Not because I sympathize with such close minded attitudes, but rather, the heresy of my post is much greater than you thought. See, those tiers aren't ordered, I just happened to list Jordan's name first. He could be 7th... or he could be 14th.

Now, if you're so affronted by my opinion that you feel compelled to respond, then perhaps you should become a project participant. Then, we could continue this conversation in one of the primary project threads, rather than derail this one.
