Who Should We Bring in to take Horford's Roster Spot

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Mon Dec 30, 2013 6:40 am

It's clear we need to bring in some bodies. We are walking wounded right now.

Horford is out indefinitely. (Pec)
Carroll is out for the road trip. (Thumb)
Jenkins has been struggling to get healthy for months. (Leg, Nerve)

Cartier and Ayon have each been injured in recent weeks.

We have enough depth on the wings to survive in the interim.

But where do we look to plug our biggest hole: On the frontline. We were always undermanned at the Center position, and as always there are slim pickings on the waiver wire/free agent market.

We could use some athleticism. Brand has vet savvy, shot blocking and a post game. But he is old and slow.
Antic has vet savvy, solid passing and three point shooting, but he is old and slow. Ayon...

well, suffice to say we need to bring someone else in.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Options:

Hilton Armstrong was just released.

Jason Collins is still available (I think).

Jason Thompson is on the trade market. (My top choice)

Bynum is on the trade market. (My least favorite option)

Asik is still available.

Ummm...after that, Drew Gooden, Desagna Diop, Johan Petro.

We need a Center. Now more than ever. But the pickings are slim.

Johan Petro

Francisco Elson

Fabricio Oberto

I think coach Budz has a history with all of these guys. They would probably fit into the system right away enough to be serviceable for the next six months.

Fabricio Oberto is old and slow. Johan Petro and Francisco Elson are no better than Ayon and Antic.

Hilton Armstrong is just slow as he always was and isn't better than what we have.

The best we can do is bring in someone like Earl Barron( a guy who MYSTERIOUSLY can't keep a job despite performing well every chance he gets) if we are looking to upgrade on a rebounding/defensive front, maybe Drew Gooden if you are looking for an upgrade in offense, but he really isn't that much of a Center.

I agree with you on Jason Thompson though.

I do think most of this is that the first games without Horford we ran into the best post up player in the league in Jefferson and a star in the making in Nikola Vučević who has been a beast inside against pretty much anyone. I don't think its as bad as we think it is. Its not good either, but I don't think there is a upgrade for the front court to be had right now that are better than what we have (outside of Barron, who again I like).

Jason Thompson was really intriguing until last year (or the year before) he got less minutes.

Asik must be the best one available for sure. Just afraid of what he costs.

Sums up how I feel.

If the cost is too high, we sign a scrub, and just play out the rest of the season.

Agree. even Thompson salary at 5.5 over 3 more years is not worth it. I would go for Hilton.
Has done a decent job for us in the past...unless Petro has been released from his Chineses team.

He (Petro) actually has been on Dec 3. He would be my top choice especially to play the bigs C (Hibbert, Vucevic, Howard, etc...).

Chris Kaman is not being used. Jordan Hill's time is sporadic

I wish Charlotte would get interested in being sellers at the deadline. Would the Hawks be interested in reuniting Jefferson and Milsap? Then the problem becomes where to find matching salary on the Hawks.

Al Horford for Al Jefferson straight up?

Al Jefferson for Brand, filler of the Hawks choice and right for Bobcats to swap picks?

Jefferson has never struck me as a winner. He's even in the midst of a crazy stat streak yet the Bobcats aren't winning any better.

Can't see the value in trading a better Horford for Jefferson.

Jefferson has been solid, but the pick swap means giving up on the Brooklyn first.

nothing with this regime suggests to me they are going to overspend, so I think Asik is out unless it ends up being for something small like some filler players. IE John jenkins for Asik straight up , a deal so dumb we would be the laughing stock if we didnt do it.

I also dont see any blockbuster trades going down, (like a horford for Jefferson) or something of that nature.

No, I think what we do is we will probably resign some big out there to be serviceable, but we kinda already have 3 Centers in that Center By Committee Role.

Increasingly Im thinking we are just going to hold pat, and do nothing. ride it out.

Might this be the best time to go after Gasol? He's in trade talks as it is with the Lakers trying to get some flexibility. I think he'd be awesome in our system from an offensive standpoint. Still won't help us much on defense, but he won't be a stiff either. Haven't looked at the financials, but I know we have a ton of flexibility to make moves. With his expiring deal, we will be able to hold onto our future ability to improve the team.

Honestly I don't see much if any point in gunning for any win-now trades. As is, our roster even with a healthy Horford gets plowed by Miami/Indy in the playoffs. Without Horford, we're much worse but we still make the playoffs. Furthermore, there's no point of us tanking either, since we get to swap with BKN (who is worse than us) and the Celtics hold our own pick.

Bring Bebe/Muscala over early and give them some real NBA minutes or sign some cheap scrubs. I'm personally in favor of bringing over Mus (since Bebe is injured).

His contract is not an easy one to match. He is making 19 million.
