Nevermind the fact that Muscala/Tavares are really CENTERS and Payne looked to me much more athletic than Muscala. But even then, getting rid of a player you drafted so highly so quickly just doesnt sit well with me. You can disagree with that, and I have no problem with that either.
But I just think when you trade a player for "flexibility" and nothing else, you gave up on him and you probably drafted him way too high and you didnt scout him very well.
I do (also, 15 is not 'very high,' it's the dead middle of the first round). You make moves looking forward, not looking back at the sunk cost. Right now we are in a prime position to WIN an NBA championship. As such, we should be making moves to maximize that chance.
You should get a 2nd year production out of a top 15 pick if youre doing it right. So now we are going to quibble over the adjective of HIGH or VERY HIGH or SORTA HIGH ?
top 15 should be a contributor by years 2/3.
Is Payne going to contribute this year? Highly doubtful. The flexibility his roster spot brings is worth more alone than the expected value he brings to the table. And then on top of that we get a (****) pick coming back while saving cap space. Now we're $5M under cap, which we can use to sign a FA or use to absorb a contract.
He wasnt drafted to contribute this year.
So you traded a top 15 pick to get a top 15-25 pick in 2 years? You just reset the clock on DEVELOPING that pick. For what? CASH? To sign another FA? Or sit on our hands like we did with the Lou/BEBE trade?
So why did we draft Payne in the first place? Obviously I don't think anyone was expecting we'd be as good as we are, including management and players. At that time drafting for continuity was of high important. Now? Future continuity is a lot less important.
Sounds like the Spurs model to me
ROLLEYES x2
LOL at people justifying scrapping first round picks because we have to win a championship TODAY and not caring about the future.
You guys are so shortsighted. This was the same group of people bitching and moaning about wanting a winner and a sustainable good franchise, now, you win 41 games before the AS break and its
FUTURE? **** THE FUTURE, now its "Future continuity is a LOT LESS important".
really?
So , like ATLHAWKS said, why not cut Jenkins? Someone who is not getting ANY playing time either, why cut a 1st round 6'10 player and not the injury prone SG who doesnt play?
