FINALLY- Hawks Announce New World Class Training Facility

The Atlanta Hawks announced today alongside Emory Healthcare plans to build a training and sports medicine center on Executive Park Drive in Brookhaven. The facility will serve as the team's official practice site. The project is expected to start this summer.

Along with the naming rights, Emory will officially become the official sports medicine provider of the team. The facility will be the first in the NBA to be co-located with an entire sports medicine center. This will provide immediate and expert treatment on-site to state of the art equipment for players.

"When we became owners, one of our top priorities was to provide the resources necessary to build a world-class training facility—a key element of being a first-class franchise that consistently competes at the highest level," Hawks Principal Owner Tony Ressler said in a statement by the Hawks. "We are thrilled with the partnership that Steve and Bud have forged with Dr. Boden and the Emory team in developing a new facility that will be at the forefront of how professional teams approach integrating sports medical technology in their training centers."

"It is a privilege to be partnering with a local institution that is a world leader in the medical field and that also shares our vision and passion for excellence," Ressler added. "In addition, we are proud that this facility will go beyond benefitting just our players, but will also be a valuable sports medicine resource available to the entire community."

Hawks apparently hope to use this facility as a means to attract Free Agents. not a bad approach. Well done Ressler & Co.

Ive practiced where they practice at Philips, and played a few times there, its horrible. I cant believe an NBA franchise has that type of facility. Just terrible. Ive been in LA fitness Gyms that were nicer.

Hawks owner Tony Ressler agrees:

TonyRessler wrote:From the first day I toured our practice facilities, I felt that the Atlanta Hawks were and are at a professional disadvantage facilities-wise; my view was that it was job No. 1 to change that. That was absolutely our first and highest objective.

This is very much an indictment upon previous ownership.

We'd spend $20+ million on Joe Johnson annually, but not shell out a few million for a top coach or top training facility. :nonono:
Man, the Atlanta Spirit was just awful.

Yep, the ASG was notorious for not putting any money in the ancillary services for the Hawks - like a scouting Department, coaches. front office personnel, marketing etc.
Good thing Bud got rid of Wally Blaze.

The start of construction on the Hawks’ new practice facility has been delayed until at least late June.

The $50 million-plus facility was to break ground in mid-May, the team announced at its unveiling in April. Those plans have been pushed back until after the NBA Draft, which will be held June 23. The facility is scheduled to be opened for the 2017-18 season.

Here

I know it's completely unrelated, but it's interesting that this announcement was made directly following a second straight playoff sweep.

Could Ressler be withholding investments in the facility until after the draft and Free Agency?

Perhaps a good motivational tool for Wes and Bud to recruit harder. (Joking! mostly)

I'd be concerned if the' open by date' was changed by 6+ months. Delaying the 'break-ground' date is par the course in the construction business.

Mike Woodson disagrees with your assessment.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the Hawks’ new $50 million practice facility will be held on June 24, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned.

The facility, a joint venture between the Hawks and Emory Healthcare, will be a 90,000 square foot complex built in Brookhaven. The state-of-the-art facility is projected to be ready for the 2017-18 season

The ground breaking will be held the day after the NBA Draft. Members of Hawks ownership will attend the ceremony.

Right now, the Atlanta Hawks practice in a no-frills gym inside Phillips Arena, not far from the arena’s main court.

As practice facilities go, it’s outdated. Some big-time college basketball programs have nicer practice facilities and more amenities.

That’s about to change.

In the fall, the Hawks will move into a 90,000-square feet facility that cost nearly $50 million. But it’s more than just an NBA practice facility.

The Hawks are teaming with Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center and P3 (Peak Performance Project) to create a center that not only includes modern amenities but one that incorporates the best of sports medicine and science.

Emory is moving its entire sports medicine division into the practice facility.

NBA teams are opening new practice facilities year after year. With a salary cap and luxury tax system limiting money spent on players, teams look for other ways to support players. Practice facilities are front and center in the NBA’s arms race.

There's another component to the new facility. With at least 50 high-level players – NBA, D-League, college – spending time in the Atlanta area during the summer, the Hawks want their facility to become a site for quality pickup games in the offseason. The center will have a visitor’s locker room, too.

Kudos to the braintrust for coming up with the idea and negotiating this partnership. This looks wonderful.
