Can’t forget the financial aspect of that trade as well. Let’s be honest, acquiring Horford wasn’t the reason we gave up a 1st. If I remember correctly, Presti said everyone else wanted a 1st just to take Al’s contract on. The reason we gave a 1st was to dump Kemba’s contract for a much lesser one. Horford actually being good and someone we liked was a nice bonus prize.

Clearing that Kemba deal allowed us to duck the tax another year while still making the mid season moves we did (mainly White). And saving money in year 2 probably created the payroll flexibility to land Brogdon which in turn led to Holiday here now.

Not saying it isn’t a big time what-if. But that trade has definitely had more far reaching implications for us than just getting Al back. Realistically he’s not even the reason we had to give up the 1st.

Sengun > J. Green isn't looking super crazy anymore.

The big thing he has going for him is his college career. If it was just the NBA HOF he doesn’t make it but if he wins a nba chip; that coupled with his college championships should give him a decent shot

I agree he needs one (or more!) NBA titles to get in the Hall. Which — without citing any evidence or looking into it — I feel to be getting a bit diluted lately. And once he’s there, I just want the clip of him crunking on Giannis in 2022 on repeat.

Keep in mind, if Al goes into the HOF, #42 goes in the rafters too! (I’m for it:)

2. Boston Celtics
13-4 record, plus-8.6 net rating
Preseason ranking: no. 2

There are a lot of things about this Celtics team to praise, but I want to use this space to give love to Al Horford, who at age 37 is now primarily coming off the bench but remains an excellent defensive player. Horford is still one of the heaviest switch defenders in the NBA, managing to corral scoring wings like Anthony Edwards and Khris Middleton and speedy guards like Cam Thomas and Trae Young. Late in the fourth quarter Sunday, Horford switched onto Trae Young and then swatted his shot into the first row, right into the hands of his own son. At this point, Horford is primarily a ball mover and spot-up shooter on offense. But as a big who can play alongside anyone because of his perimeter skills or slide into the starting lineup when Kristaps Porzingis is absent, he remains a critical piece for the Celtics. Boston’s Finals odds will come down to the levels Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown reach against elite defenses that are game-planning to stop them, but with role players like Horford, the Celtics have everything else a team needs.

Horford allows just 38.6% on shots against him. That's the lowest mark among 153 players who have defended at least 10 FGAs per game and played 5+ games.

If he's washed, I feel bad for the rest of the league.

One thing I'm pleased to see is how committed Joe is to limiting Al's minutes so far this season. Sub-30 minutes with KP injured for a game they were treating as important shows a lot more restraint than last season when he was playing starter minutes from the get go. Currently at just 26 mpg for the season. Hopefully this remains true and he can end the season with fresher legs for the playoffs.

Al Horford shattering his efficiency record from two (69.2% this year, previous high was 60.4% in 2018-2019) while having fewer of his twos assisted than in any of his previous seasons was not on my bingo card for the year lol. Hasn't missed a free throw yet either. This man is special.

Dunno what Bulls are doing switching Drummond off into the perimeter lol.

Horford is "making them miss" apart from just contesting. 2nd best in difference in defensive field goal % among 57 centers who have defended at least 2 3FGA/game. Drummond is 17th on the list.

Sounds like Drummond isn't doing terribly by that metric either. ;)

After a slow start, Horf is shooting 44.2% from 3 in the last 15 games, tops on the team.

Man, Al is such a good dude.

And Theis has the same accent as Dennis Schroder. I can't figure out why :D
