I don't remember talking about this stuff before Lebron bitched out and opted to take the path of least resistance. Guy's a trendsetter in the worst way.
I don't know if players ever actually HAD that much competitiveness, or if the rules and team strategies for free agency were just more limiting, but I'm nostalgic for those days too, and the impression of competitiveness. Players seemed to have ego, they looked for situations where they could have more money, bigger responsibility, etc. Kobe wanted Shaq gone so he could come out from under his shadow, that sort of thing. Now everyone wants to team up and make life easier for themselves. It's understandable- would you rather play with Lebron James and Kyrie Irving or Ricky Rubio and Corey Brewer? Wouldn't you rather play with Irving, Waiters and Love, if you're Lebron? It's just a little bit shameless. Unfortunately I think our title team played a big part in this- three guys who struggled tremendously bearing the burden of being a 'franchise player' (a term no one uses anymore) suddenly got together and had huge success. They also proved that a top heavy team (3 all stars) can be successful even if it's only 7-8 deep.
