Re: Jaylen browns next step
He certainly needs to improve his handle, but I think another very important part of that is that he desperately needs to learn to change speeds and penetrate under control. Smart, who still cannot finish, finally learned this skill this past season. Instead of charging around the screen like a bull set loose, he slowed down, processed information, got his man on his back -- and made a nice pass or failed to finish. If Jaylen can learn to change speeds, and exist at a slower speed at times, that will certainly help cover for his mediocre handle.

Love JB's attitude and work ethic. I don't think he has "superstar" potential but he could be a Top 50 player in the league and mix in some All-Star appearances. He's gotta make better decisions with the ball in his hands. Far too often he leaves his feet with no plan, dribbles into double teams etc...
I brings the ruckus to the ladies!

I've always preferred his first step.

He's so used to be physically and athletically superior than his opponents. He could outjump anyone and blow by any double team in high school. Doesn't work like that in the NBA.

Semi? lol not even in the same area cod. JB has some things to improve but this is a crazy hot take.
For now he is a 3-and-D guy with good open court skills. He's getting most of his mins at the 2 spot.
things to work on:
- posting up smaller guards when the opportunity arises
- making quick decisions to slash to the rim
- moving without the ball to receive in better spots
- passing in the flow of pace and space
- ballhandling, but it's not the achilles that people are making it out to be -- he isn't much worse than bradley if at all.
Given Brown current deficiencies, he is not that much better than Semi right now. Semi a better shooter & defender. Obviously Brown has more upside given raw he is.
At stage Brown is not even a 3D guy. He gets by just by bein g a better athlete. So his next step is to improve on every basketball skill known to man because he doesn't have an elite skill. Improve his BBIQ and feel for the game.
We have a ways to go with Jaylen. Anyone expecting a grand leap next year will likely be disappointed.
Although he now has another 2.5 months to work on... everything.
All you could ask for is improvements each year. With Jaylen we have about long way to go. Only thing I don't see him improving is his feel for the game. That is one of the skills you either have it or don't.
Speaking Jaylen, can we please stop calling future all star when he haven't done anything? People were doing the same thing with Marcus Smart.

That's right. Unfortunately too many guys never get past that mentality. I think JB has it in him to learn and work and hone his game.

Yeah. I think that's hyperbole now. Gotta chill with calling him a JB type of player in 4 years.
His game needs A LOT of polishing. Tatum may be a better contributor. Ball, Fultz and MAYBE Tatum I feel confident will be all stars. Right now I'm 50/50 on Jaylen. Depends on this season

Is too much to ask for an all-star appearance out of a 6th and 3rd overall pic? Seriously I expect all-star appearance from Tatum if he doesn't is it my expectations that we're too high? No they're high lottery pics you should expect all-star futures from them.

Year 1: Decent 10/11th man and not in the bottom 50 of the league. Accomplished.
Year 2: Good 8th man. Preferably cracking the top 200 of the league.
Year 3: Starting caliber or very good 6th man.
Year 4: Leap
I think that's the progression that has to happen for him to succeed. Year 3 and 4 being the hardest. Especially if the shot and bbiq flatline.

8th in regular season mph and 9th in playoff mpg on the team last year. I'd like to see him up to 7th in regular season and 5th or 6th in the playoffs. He'll have to prove to be a better player than 1 or 2 of Smart, Crowder, Morris in order to meet that playoff goal.

Honestly yes. Anointing someone an all star when they haven't done anything just stupid. At least wait til they have a breakout season.
This is another stupid thing people do, put too much emphasizes on pick range
If Smart and Jaylen don't become stars would you consider them a bust?

I don't know, but he's a very smart, thoughtful young man with great work ethic. He wants to hit that next level bad. I'm very excited to see his progression.

Work on handles. All that athleticism means nothing if you can't get to the spot you want on the floor. Then just basketball IQ getting caught in the air in between etc. Need to be decisive and keep the game simple. If it's not there pass the ball.

Vision. Vision. Vision. The kid has tremendous athletic gifts but struggled to navigate traffic even in the summer league at times. He's got to learn to see past his own defender and how to make the quick pass or set up your own defender to get an angle where help is less likely to get in the way.
Without that, he'll never be more than a secondary scorer who can take advantage of other guys like IT attacking off the bounce. He has plenty of time to develop this skill, but it's not one easily built up. Often it's the difference between Tobias Harris and Paul Pierce.

Re: Jaylen browns next step
I am sure Jaylen becomes an all star. He showed me he was more than athletic last season. His game still has some growing to do, but his determination and work ethic will make the growing happen fast. Peeps should not use summer league to judge players. His first summer league game was very good. He scored at will. Then he seemed to be more passive as the coaches seemed to want other players to shoot the ball.
