About 5 years ago the American League held the best shortstops in the league with players like Jeter and Nomar. The National League has quickly taken over this title with these young shortstops.

On another note, who's the best AL shortstop? Is it still Derek Jeter?

It really may be...which is sad to say. Carlos Guillen changed positions, Tejada went to the NL, ARod is over at 3rd, Nomar is long gone, and Peralta never lived up to the hype. There really isn't much competition so Jeter kind of gets it by default.

Edgar Renteria and Adam Everett could probably argue a little with you nyk.

And here comes everyone saying Everett, what the hell is wrong with you.

if michael young could regain some power this year he's in the conversation w/jeter, both are horrific defensive SS though and young will probably be moved once elvis andrus gets the call up in a couple years.

Where exactly are saving singles and producing singles a zero-sum effect? I'd imagine that such a concept would manifest itself in any number of the WARP derivatives and would give a rather closer value for the two players.

How isn't it?

If you are talking about WARP, I really wouldn't trust the defensive ratings they use. Just go look at how amazing Johnny Peralta is because of those defensive metrics.

Young did slip my mind, he is the closest to Jeter...if he can regain his old form he'd be better.

Why would it be? You're assuming that the baseline defensive ability to prevent a single has a same value as the baseline ability to hit a single. I'd hazard a guess that, normalized, preventing a single is a much easier action that hitting a single.

Have any research suggesting otherwise? I'd like to read it if so.

It doesn't matter how hard it is to do the thing, the outcome is the same, one bag. Bunting for a hit could be harder/easier than actually swinging for a hit but it doesn't matter, the outcome is the same, as long as you get a bag.

At least thats the way I see it, although I see where your coming from. With the the fielding being an average of all the SS, and OPS not being be, although I still think I'm right, but could be wrong. Damn man, go recruit some sabermetricians for the site.

But first, no one is saying that Derek Jeter is a lousy player. Let

As far as I can tell, fielding runs in FRAA and FRAR along with other run-tallying fielding metrics aren

Hanley, is little by little establishing himself as one of the best overall players in the league. I just wish the Marlins could find a #1 hitter and find a way to put him 3 or 4 to get his production up even further.

Is Hanley already solidified himself as a better overall player than Reyes? Or is it too early to say at the moment?

I agree with 34 celtic,I think Jose Reyes is tops right now,but i also like watching Tulowitzki play and if healthy I think he'd be talked about just as Hanley and Reyes are.
