Fernando Martinez to start in AA

Post#1 » by bigboy1234 » Tue Apr 3, 2007 8:23 pm

So do you think the Mets are rushing Martinez at all?

How do you think he'll fair as an 18 year old in AA?

I don't really see why they did this. In 119 at bats in high A ball he only hit .193 with 24 Ks and 6 BBs. To earn a promotion you usually have to either have a lot of success in a short period of time or even if you don't dominate, at least play a full season so you have something to build on...Martinez did neither. I don't understand why the Mets would risk messing up one of the best prospects in baseball and one of the best prospects in maybe a while.

I don't know what the Mets saw from him this spring, but I guess it was enough to move up for whatever reason. If he was 21 I'd say it doesn't matter because he has to be able to hit at higher levels already, but the kid is 18.

Yeah, such a rush job. If he had killed High A, even in his limited at bat, that would have been a rush but with how much he struggled, it's a real real real bad move. mahalo

Wow, I was not aware of how poorly he performed in Single A. Going off those numbers he looks pretty overmatched. I don't understand the reason, he has plenty of time to get acclimated to the pro game and still be quite young when ready to make an impact.

Maybe they think he strong enough mentally that can handle it if he falters. Just imagine if he succeeds, though. He might be in the majors for good by 20. They didn't even rush Jose Reyes this quick.

But there's a level of rushingness and I think this is crossing it. It's not a matter of being able to mentally handle it, it's that you are pretty much wasting much of the year because rather than growing as a player and trying to improve his weakness, he's going to be spending his time simply trying to keep his head above water. Sure, he could be an improved player but I don't see the benefits outweighing the negatives when he could start the year at High A and get promoted mid-season. mahalo

Wow, the Mets have a ton of young friggin' talent. This guy, Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra. Guerra could be the best pitching prospect in baseball next year and Martinez the best hitting prospect.

Guerra needs to work on his K rate a little. Before tonight he had a beautiful 4.00 GO/AO, but he's back at 2.20 right now. So far he's had 2 great starts, 2 not so great starts, oddly enough both the not so good starts were against the Palm Beach Cardinals. But I still love this kid. He will be without a doubt a top 10 pitching prospect by next year.

Martinez is currently struggling pretty bad, after a hot start, he's down to a .670 OPS, .313 OBP.

I think the plan is for him to start in AA Binghamton, but I wouldn't be shocked if he was in Shea Stadium BEFORE September 1st.
