cardinals (87-69) @ cubs (69-87)

game 1: wood vs. wainwright 7:05 pm
game 2: hendricks vs. miller 7:05 pm
game 3: arrieta vs. lackey 7:05 pm

only 6 games left in the year, kind of sad - want to keep watching the kids

Castillo is going to be around for two more years then he'll leave as an FA. They need to improve the catcher position by replacing Baker. The Cubs have been the worst team in baseball at pitch framing this year with both Castillo and Baker being terrible at it. This hurts the pitching staff and leads to giving up more runs. Castillo's bat is not good enough to make up for it. He's a solid part-time catcher, but he shouldn't be starting for a team with a goal of making a postseason run.

do you think the cubs should go the route of oakland and have a platoon of catchers or try and grab an everyday starter?

It depends on what happens with Schwarber in instructs. If they can teach him to passable at catcher, i.e. Mike Piazza, with his bat then you roll with Welly and another split time catcher next year. If Schwarber proves there is no chance he can figure out how to catch then you try to find a short-term #1 catcher with Welly as your 60ish game #2 catcher and hope that one of the two catchers you have in A ball can develop or maybe you add a long-term option through trade or something.

I wouldn't rule out Russell Martin on a 4 year deal around $15M/yr if Schwarber shows he can't catch. Then you can move one of Schwarber, Russell, Castro, Baez or Bryant for a piece you want either during the off-season or at the deadline since there won't be room for all of them if Schwarber is stuck in LF. They will also have McKinney as a trade option since he will blocked in LF as well as Vogelbach and some other pieces they could part with like C.J. Edwards, Pierce Johnson, Amaya, etc in the right deal.

They should make an offer for Gattis.

No thank you on Gattis. He's a "Mike Napoli" in that he's a 1b/dh playing catcher right now. There is a reason why the Braves are likely trading Gattis this offseason and Beathancourt is only part of the reason.

I prefer to throw cash at Russell Martin. Helps the Cubs win next year, helps to mentor Schwarber if he can stick at catcher, and move Martin when Schwarber is ready.

But if the Cubs prefer acquiring a backup instead, I would look for Jose Laboton or Hank Conger to be the guy the Cubs target.
